OSCAR-NOMINATED actor Sir Ian McKellen certainly turned a few heads when he turned up at a Romsey theatre.

The star of The Lord of the Rings trilogy posed with fans and signed autographs as he took his seat at the Plaza Theatre on Saturday and spoke to cast members of the Love off the Shelf production afterwards.

Sir Ian was there in his role as the patron of the Little Theatre Guild, which was holding its annual general meeting at the theatre, owned by the Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (RAODS).

The Little Theatre Guild is made up of amateur societies from around the country that own their own theatre, like RAODS.

Bob Heather, from RAODS, said: “There were a few surprised head turns when they sat down and saw him.

“One lady said ‘do you know, that looked just like...’ and I said ‘yes, it was’ – she didn’t have to even finish the question.”
