Dozens of firefighters fight blaze in Portswood, Southampton

Daily Echo: Major fire in city Major fire in city

MORE than 30 firefighters tackled a huge blaze that broke out at a car workshop in Southampton.

Part of the busy Portswood Road was cordoned off after the fire broke out shortly after 11am, with businesses and homes evacuated as fire crews cooled and removed potentially dangerous gas cylinders from the scene.

Eyewitnesses described seeing flames leap up to 30ft into the air as thick black smoke belched from the large fire, behind the parade of shops between Broadlands Road and Mayfield Road, leaving an acrid burning smell.

Appliances from Winchester, St Mary's, Eastleigh, Hightown, Redbridge, the special equipment unit from Southampton and the incident command unit from the service's Eastleigh headquarters were all sent to help tackle the blaze.

Police shut the main road and ordered an exclusion zone as the fire crews used jets, breathing apparatus and thermal imaging cameras as they quickly contained the fire and stopped it spreading.

But the single-storey garage was completely destroyed by the time the fire was declared extinguished at 1.38pm, once the cylinders had been cooled and removed from the scene.

The manager of the nearby One Stop store said she smelled burning in the shop, but thought it was just a heater so ignored it.

Soon after, she heard loud popping noises. When she went outside to investigate she saw the fire behind the properties.

"It was quite big and fierce, the flames were well above the shops, but the firefighters were here really quickly and go it under control," she said.

Ambulance crews were on standby throughout the incident, but it is not thought anyone was hurt.

The Environment Agency was called to the scene by fire chiefs to help with water run-off issues.

DOZENS of firefighters are today tackling a blaze thought to have broken out on an industrial estate.

Either there is a fire or there isn't.
Dreadful reporting.
I suggest someone from the Echo does their reporting job and goes to have a look.

It might not have broken out on the industrial estate, but merely have spread to there. Since the Echo aren't time-travelling fire investigators, they can't say for sure where it broke out.

there's such a thing as trying to be *too clever* isn't there?

the echo is not suggesting that there may or may not be a fire, there quite clearly is. the echo is pointing out that at this early stage the precise origins of the fire are unclear, but the best guess is that it started on the industrial estate.

the echo is full of sloppy journalism and inaccuracies, just not on this occasion.

Yup. The writing here is sometimes sub-GCSE standard - but on this occasion there's nothing wrong with the wording at all.

Isn't it so very sad that you lot feel it's a time to be picky and childish over a serious incident! There may well have been a mis-type in the initial reporting - but - at least there's no SUB-STANDARD, idle chatting as ALL of yours cleary is.

If you can not comment fairly and in an adult manner - quite frankly SHUT THE F*** UP!

Well for some of us from Southampton that live abroad don't have much choice of another local news source.

Considering that these journos a professional and you would assume that they would have some sort of degree status then it is pretty poor at times.

However, I understand that most of the issues are caused because of the Editors' conception that he is working for the Sun and needs to get the news out there quickly..... regardless of how sparse and inaccurate it is.
