Heart experts on mission to save lives
HEART experts in Southampton have embarked on a mission to save the lives of sportsmen and women across the city.
Sparked by the shock collapse Premier League footballer Fabrice Muamba during a match earlier this year, cardiologists at Spire Southampton Hospital are offering cardiac screenings to help identify those at risk.
Those at the Bodysound Gym in Chandler's Ford were the first to benefit from a free screening event, where they had the chance to get ECG tests and echo scans to detect if there were any signs or symptoms of heart disease.
Steve Robinson, specialist cardiology manager, from Spire, said: “Earlier this year we were all shocked to see Fabrice Muamba collapse on the football pitch from a cardiac arrest.
“Predicting a cardiac arrest is extremely difficult in sports individuals as they usually have no symptoms, but performing at such high intensity puts them at a greater risk of a cardiac event. We hope that our screening service will raise awareness and give people who participate in sport the option to feel more assured for the future.”
