YOBS used a firework to blow up the front door letterbox of a couple in their 90s.
The elderly pair heard a loud bang outside their home in Redwood Close, Lymington, before discovering the box in pieces on the front step.
Police say the incident could have had “serious consequences” if a curtain hanging behind the door had caught fire rather than simply being singed by the firework.
The incident happened on Halloween night, yet the couple said they had not been visited by Trick or Treaters that evening.
But officers are hopeful there are witnesses.
PC Gary Saunders said: “Although we would like everyone to enjoy Halloween and bonfire night, it is important that people are aware of the dangers of firework misuse.”
Anyone with information about the incident, at 7.30pm, should contact Lymington police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
