ONE of Southampton's army of neighbourhood wardens has scooped a national award for his work helping elderly people in the city.

Ray Ball, who has worked as a warden for three years in the Weston area of the city, was presented with the Help the Aged Warden Achievement Award at a special ceremony.

The award, which is sponsored by the charity, aims to recognise the work that a warden or project does to reduce the isolation of older people in their area.

The prize also recognises people who have helped elderly people to maintain their independence and have provided the opportunity for older people to make their voices heard on things that matter to them.

Mr Ball has helped clean up paths at the Weston Court sheltered housing scheme. He has also fitted door chains to resident's homes, organised Christmas parties, outings and quiz events.
