A FAILED Southampton shopping centre is set to make way for a new supermarket bringing 400 jobs after councillors today approved the plans.
Developers plan to demolish the once popular 1970s East Street shopping centre for a giant Morrisons supermarket.
Arcadian Estates says its development will re-establish a strong pedestrian link between St Mary’s and the city centre.
Two levels of parking for 286 cars will be built above the store for both shoppers and visitors.
Travelators will take customers and trolleys to and from the 60,000 square foot foodstore.
The £30m development has been backed by local traders and residents as well as the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and the City of Southampton Society.
The plans were approved this afternoon by Southampton City Council's planning committee.
David Lewis from the development manager Centros said: “This positive decision means that our programme to open the new Morrisons store by the end of 2014 remains on track.
“Over the next few months we will be working through all the planning conditions with council officers and the key local stakeholders with the aim of starting work on site next summer.”
Council leader Richard Williams said he was delighted with the result.
"This brings the promise of 400 new jobs to Southampton and is a key part of a bigger plan to reinvigorate this important part of the city.
“This prestigious development will open up East Street, re-connect the walk way between the city centre and St. Mary’s and provides some good quality improvements to the area and to the shopping experience.
"Local traders, residents and other interested parties support this exciting project and I, like them, am looking forward to seeing the next phase of the development move ahead.”

Yes when the last story came out I checked that the pub was still there and it was. Very glad of this as the place is decent after home matches. Can't say about the small place but that is right next to the current east street shopping centre

this is great news for southampton as now a next generation shopping mall can now start to fly the flag for st marys , this was a huge task to take on but it would still be nice one day to have a multi plex swimming pool and activity centre for southampton as well but may when this council runs out of ideas things might start to look up again , i can just imagine food stamps making a come back be warned the ghosts of christmas pass will come and haunt you hahahahahahah.

at least here the people of town will have more choice than just Asda or Lidl

It is at the edge of teh retail core and I would guess that bothe the developer and Morrisons would have done a little bit of research, impact study, traffic planning.
Morrisons will be paying circa £20psf which they will not do lightly.
Any other suggestions for an empty, obsolete shopping centre?
