Have been to Nicholls Town(and other places) on the morning of collection? Its a disgrace the amount of waste that is produced in a week.Every recycle bin is contaminated because people plainly just dont care. This attitutude spreads itself pretty much through the city and beyound. Why? The fact is there is no enforcement in place and the vast turnover of population the city suffers from(students and temporary eu/asian workers. Just the way it is Im afraid.
Council policy is that recyling is voluntary so the problem is therein.
Who after 15 yrs or so of wheelie bin collections or so is going to tell a ever increasing immigrant population that if you dont recycle correctly we will fine you. My point is validated when the "good" recyclers,generally speaking" are located in areas away from student and city centre areas.

I’m happy to say this had cross-party support within the council and I thank those councillors who also lobbied government on behalf of Southampton and our bid.
so exactly who do you think lobbied government?
The clue is in Cross party support & if those people who were lobbying hadn't applied for this grant exactly how would Labour have increased the amount?
Even with you low IQ you must be able to work out that if no application had been made by the Tories Labour couldn't have asked to increase it now could they?

Once again why do you work for our city council when Eastleigh might need you? is it because the pays better or aren't you qualified enough for Eastleigh? I would congratulate any colour council if they decided to allow council tenants to have Solar Panels. If Cllr Thorpe actually said thank you to the Tory Party for lobbying parliament to get us this money instead of just saying all councillors I would say well done Cllr Thorpe for putting praise where praise is deserved. he even admits the groundwork was done under the tories when they put in for £3.5million & because of that they've been able to increase it. In LH's defence, his postings may be opinionated, but are seldom moronic, only a closed mind would not see the logic in what he says, I don't always agree with him, but I do look for the reasons behind what he says, it is best to keep an open mind, Coucil business should not be tainted by Party Politics but until it is free of political ties it will always be in a mess.

I've offered to teach/show some OAP's how to use the internet & set them up on it but with conmen promising the earth they haven't got back to me.
I went into schools & helped coach Rugby for no payment.
Thinklikealocal I've helped OAP's do their gardens for no payment,
After the attack on the Tory Party by a female Labour Councillor when they were agreeing to assist the Labour Council I feel it would show they haven't let that instant stop them from working for the good of the city with Labour & Cllr Thorpe could have done a lot of good for cross party working if he had acknowledged the Tories were indeed doing this?

Don't need to make any claims, go and read the mins of all the budget meeting the Council have had for the last 2 years, and will see it in black and white so its not a claim it was what was.
Its also in the manifest and i expect it will be in the next one also.

We need a shift away from the throw-away society. Weekly collections do not help whatsoever in the change of attitudes that are necessary if we are to start to tackle the waste and recycling agenda in an environmentally sound way.

Business rates – yes these do go to central government and are then redistributed back to local authorities in a way that means richer areas subsidise deprived areas. It is ALL redistributed – none is retained by the Treasury.

After the labour councillors tantrum I contacted a Tory Councillor to ask a question on your behalf about if they would still work with the Labour council to get more funding from the Government they said they would. I thank those councillors who also lobbied government on behalf of Southampton and our bid. Ironlady they say the extra money they asked Government for is Glass recycling & Composting composting home waste.
I take down potato peelings,banana skins,all lettuce & cabbage leafs plus all vegetable peelings plus tea bags .
I also take all cardboard boxes & compost them on my allotment.
meat products can't be used because of vermin(rats,Foxes) grass cutting & leafs can all be used to compost,
If you haven't got a garden ask if anyone has an allotment & if they'd like your compostable waste?

It is a fundamental chance to attitudes and habits that are needed. You've done it, so have I as well as IronLady2010. There are NO reasons why others can't follow, but it will never happen while our pathetic council (previous Tory and current Labour) pander to the very worse practices.

There is no need for job losses. Increased recycling, including glass and green kitchen waste will not only help to encourage the required lifestyle changes but will also take up the employment slack caused fortnightly waste collections.

We seem to be almost on the same side on this one at a personal level - it's the dinosaurs at the Civic (officers and councillors) that need to get real.

Freefinker I use to do leafletting with my wife to let her earn some pocket money(holiday).
We did Millbrook estate & the Channel islands estate we dis previously do A big chunk of Freemantle & Shirley.
Even with weekly collections both bins would be full with junk in both of them & plastic bags on the street.
In shirley by Grove Road in the strike with one week missed there were mountains of plastic bags,
I like you am 100% behind recycling but how could you change these type of peoples attitudes?
give them more recycle bins for glass etc; & more than likely it would be filled with any rubbish they have.
I can see the out cry if you were to fine them but I can see that something has to be done.
I saw a program about Brazil & a guy who made billions collecting rubbish for landfill.
he was rubbing his hands with glee,China was willing to pay top dollar for all recyclable materials so he had an army sorting through it.
Here there was talks of giving you a pay back for recyclable goods( full bin) on your council tax what do you think would get a change in attitude?
