Family 'amazed' by son who survived being hit by train (From Daily Echo)

Very lucky to be alive.

Just a thought from a reader who rarely posts here, maybe before reporting a death on a quiet friday evening you could check your facts first. Putting your career aside for 5 minutes to gain factual information is the very least we should expect from a local newspaper.

Best of luck to Ian and his family. Tough times ahead but a life changing event can be for the good.

At 29 years of age, you would of thought he would of known to avoid train tracks, as trains travel along them...

Luckily he survived, but why was he there in the first place?

Ted Rogers, some people only want to read what they want to read without going into detail in the story and then come up with silly comments{WHY WAS HE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE} I wonder if he has ever done jury service god forbid.

Hope hes ok but given he doesnt work for the Rail or BTP he was tresspassing by being on the tracks and therefore could only have been either:

1. Walking home (short cut ?)

2. Graffiti artist out tagging

3. Looking to rob cable to weigh in.

Fingers crossed for the lads recovery but hope this now puts others off.

What is dumb about that? He shouldn't have been there but he was and he suffered the inevitable consequences that any reasonable adult could predict would happen. He may have been drunk, he may have been stoned, he may have been depressed, he may have been psychotic, but you seem to think that there may be some entirely innocent explanation why a man would walk down busy railway tracks without even looking to see if a train was coming. I lived in Freshfield Rd for 21years & never once tried or wanted to try to walk across or near the rail tracks so sorry but he got hit for trespassing big deal!

I wish if the echo are going to print a report like this they would highlight the dangers of walking along railway tracks. Ok its a mystery why he was there and a sad story but the main theme should be don't do it. However in hind sight when I was about 10 me and my mates used to play along the railway tracks near Mount Pleasant and the River Itchen. (Steam trains in them days) What an idiot I was. Still I'd like to think I'll stay well clear of them now at 54 years.

If its a shortcut home a train travelling at 55mph does not creep up on you so can be avoided drunk, stoned or otherwise, "tagging" as far as I know is normally on stationary trains, If robbing cable the same as above would apply that you would be aware it was coming and thus avoid the train, unless of course, you didnt want to !

I feel personal thoughts and speculation on this should be kept just that.

Bottom line is this is a Son who has had life changing injuries and now needs to recover with his families love in their own time and space.

Regardless of reasons it is a miracle he survived and my thoughts, as a human being, are with him and his family now.

May have, may have and may have. The fact is he was and was hit by a train. There are I'm sure many reasons as to why, and we may or may not ever know the answer to that but I wish more people would remember that old chestnut of a saying "there but for the grace of god (who ever you may see her to be) go I.

How about train drivers who shouldn't have to come home from a innocent shift at work and then subsequently suffer from years of sleepless nights, panic attacks, depression and inability to work as a result of hitting and injurying / killing a tresspasser on the tracks (be it drunk, suicide, graffiti artist or theif).

There no go zones and no public access areas because of the dangers of trains and 3rd rails etc.

Under NO circumstances should an ordinary joe / family man just doing his job have to live with the memory / guilt / after effects of hitting someone who should not have been there.

Railworkers have to periodically go on track awareness courses and stick to strict proceedures when working trackside due to the inherint dangers.

Anyone who thinks they can just enter a restricred area, unauthorised is either up to no good or plain stupid.

There is no excuse for it be it robbing cable, walking home or rescuing a sick kitten.

if heading for town there's a track behind a fence that leads to town.

The only way to get near those tracks is to climb fences or get down from the platform with out touching the electric tracks. so unless you can shed light on why he did it I can't feel sympathy.

It shouldn't have even been reported if that's indeed what it was & from some one who's brother committed suicide even though we saved him once this guy needs help right now not paper articles.

Thats the trouble now,trains DO creep up on you. I have worked on the tracks for 20 years and long gone are the early warning sounds i.e. clickety clack clickety clack as the train travels over the joints,we have miles of CWR (continous welded rail) now,and with extranous noise (like road traffic,wind or aircraft) it is very easy for a train to be virtually on top of you before you know it. Also,obviously, the trains themselves are very quiet now,we really have to be alert these days.
Regardless of the reasons why this chap was on the railway,I hope he and his family can get through this,best wishes.

Now is not the time to publicly show or write about your total lack of sympathy for another persons plight. In all your comments you display a distinct lack of compassion and are highly judgemental. Leads me to the conclusion that throughout your life you have probably struggled to acquire true friendship as hard as you tried (probably too hard - needy and pest like) likely to have been bullied as a child which has continued through to adulthood leaving you with

For the people putting horrible comments on here that don't know him ..please think about it, its someones life!! All my thoughts are with Ian and his family and I hope he makes a quick recovery and gets his life back on track.

Yes well done to all the medics involved. True heroes on a daily basis.

I'd also like to know when the daily echo will actually print this report in a consistent manner.

Firstly the chap is dead, then he's alive.

Services started running just after 9pm then reported today at 8.48pm.

His age was 39 now 29 so lost 10 years in hospital.

How this paper manages to win any awards is simply ludicrous.

i am not normally sumone that writes comments on these but set up an account just to reply to all the idiotic comments from all the narrow minded people that have nothink better to do than write horrible stupid comments that they know nothink about. have known the family for years and cannot imagin how they feel or what they are going through right now. to all the people that have wrote horrible comments can i just remind you that sumones life has been changed for ever not just ians but his familys too, it should not matter what he was doing there can u try and remember someone has lost their arm and was lucky not to lose there life!! think if it was a member of your family would you be writing all these comments no you wouldent. and to all those people that say weather he was drunk or stoned (witch i doubt he was!) do you rely think he deserved to lose an arm no he dident we all make lots of mistakes in life and im sure he feels that walking along the tracks was one of his. the unfortunate thing is he was punished for his. so all you people that have nothink positive to say keep your comments to your self, just remember it could easily be one of you we are writing a comment about on here one day. and maybey we will call you an idioit irrespective of weather it was your fault or not. last thing i want to say is i am thinking of you all and cannot belive this has happind to such a grate family but knowing the people that you are you will all pull together and find a way through this. you know where to find me if you ever need to talk.
