Family 'amazed' by son who survived being hit by train

A train at Millbrook. Picture by Markus Berg
THE PARENTS of a Hampshire man who survived being hit by a train have spoken of their son's 'miracle' escape.
As previously reported, Ian Willard, 29, was hit by a train travelling between Southampton Central and Totton. Transport police believe he had been walking alongside the tracks near Millbrook station when he was struck by the train on Friday evening.
Mum Sylvia Willard, 51, of Whitehouse Gardens, Millbrook, Southampton, said the family had been left in shock.
But she said doctors at Southampton General Hospital had been “amazed” by his “remarkable” recovery after having his arm amputated.
She said doctors told her the train had been travelling at up to 55mph.
Ms Willard said her son was struck on the left side and fell to the ground. It is not clear why he had put himself in such danger.
She said he suffered internal bleeding and a fractured bone in the head and serious injuries to his arm, which required it to be amputated at the shoulder.
“It’s just awful,” she said. “It’s a life-changing situation. He has been informed but I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. All I know is we’ve got a long road ahead of us to rebuild his life.”
She said last night her son was sitting up in bed and eating but was still very confused about what happened, believing he may have been struck by a car or been in a fight.
“He has recovered remarkably,”
she said. “The doctors are amazed he’s made such a good recovery.”
Mr Willard, who is originally from Hythe but had moved to Millbrook, used to run a garden pond business, but has been unemployed recently.
Services between Southampton Central and Brockenhurst were halted while police and paramedics attended. Passengers were initially told that a trespasser on the tracks had died.
A spokesman for British Transport Police said that Mr Willard was in a “stable condition”
and “improving”.
He said officers were trying to establish why he was walking alongside the tracks at the time but would wait until he has made a fuller recovery before speaking to him.
The tracks were handed back to Network Rail at 8.48pm.
Anyone with information can call British Transport Police on 0800 405040, quoting reference 537 of November 23.

At 29 years of age, you would of thought he would of known to avoid train tracks, as trains travel along them... Luckily he survived, but why was he there in the first place?
I'm sure they'll be glad for your sharp comments though.

Bottom line is this is a Son who has had life changing injuries and now needs to recover with his families love in their own time and space.
Regardless of reasons it is a miracle he survived and my thoughts, as a human being, are with him and his family now.

There no go zones and no public access areas because of the dangers of trains and 3rd rails etc.
Thoughts with the lad and family but "it is what it is"...........he shouldnt have been there and was breaking the law by doing so regardless of what he was up to.
Would the same level of compassion be shown if he been found with a bag of cut up cable with him or goods from within a container at freightliners ?...... or if he'd been eastern european with the above on him ?

What the frig has the nationality got to do with it? Are you hiding something? Do you need to get it off your chest? "It is what it is". Yes I agree, but that doesn't make it any less harrowing for those involved does it? You have a lot to learn. I hope you live long enough to at least make a start on learning it.

ut people would be lining up to suggest a member of an immigrant minority were up to no good if they were on the line unauthorised.
I dont discriminate - Being on a live track is tresspassing and dangerous tresspassing at that no matter what you look like / come from.
Under NO circumstances should anyone endanger the lives of others by being on the line.
Under NO circumstances should an ordinary joe / family man just doing his job have to live with the memory / guilt / after effects of hitting someone who should not have been there.
Railworkers have to periodically go on track awareness courses and stick to strict proceedures when working trackside due to the inherint dangers.
Anyone who thinks they can just enter a restricred area, unauthorised is either up to no good or plain stupid.
There is no excuse for it be it robbing cable, walking home or rescuing a sick kitten.

short cut?
Now unless he's walked off of Millbrook station to walk where?
just as quick & safer to walk alongside Millbrook rd.
if heading for town there's a track behind a fence that leads to town.
as far as I remember those tracks are electrified aren't they?
is all the story being told? was it a suicide attempt or was he just stoned/drunk . Sorry but if the latter I can't see why we should be sad for him or his family.
If suicide was the intention them YES the guy needs help but the last thing he would need is to be in the Echo

Sorry if I find no compassion but what are we being told by the Echo?
he went to walk by the rail tracks between Millbrook & Totton?
The only way to get near those tracks is to climb fences or get down from the platform with out touching the electric tracks. so unless you can shed light on why he did it I can't feel sympathy.
If as I've suggested this was a suicide attempt then yes I feel for him but an article in the paper feeling sorry for his family isn't going to cut it is it.
It shouldn't have even been reported if that's indeed what it was & from some one who's brother committed suicide even though we saved him once this guy needs help right now not paper articles.
So if you have any genuine information on this we have to go by it being some guy trying to take a short cut alongside electrified lines & if that's so I have no sympathy for him

Here, There wrote:Thats the trouble now, trains DO creep up on you. I have worked on the tracks for 20 years and long gone are the early warning sounds i.e. clickety clack clickety clack as the train travels over the joints,we have miles of CWR (continous welded rail) now,and with extranous noise (like road traffic, wind or aircraft) it is very easy for a train to be virtually on top of you before you know it. Also, obviously, the trains themselves are very quiet now,we really have to be alert these days.
If its a shortcut home a train travelling at 55mph does not creep up on you so can be avoided drunk, stoned or otherwise, "tagging" as far as I know is normally on stationary trains, If robbing cable the same as above would apply that you would be aware it was coming and thus avoid the train, unless of course, you didnt want to !
Regardless of the reasons why this chap was on the railway,I hope he and his family can get through this, best wishes.

"I think he got just punishment' that single statement tells me everything I would ever really want to know about your character.
In all your comments you display a distinct lack of compassion and are highly judgemental. Leads me to the conclusion that throughout your life you have probably struggled to acquire true friendship as hard as you tried (probably too hard - needy and pest like) likely to have been bullied as a child which has continued through to adulthood leaving you with
very low self esteem which you try to counter by positioning yourself as some kind of mock authority in the work place (union rep, H&S etc) or attempting to be some kind of social authority by making unfounded suppositions on individuals and situations you read about on Internet forums.
Pathetic.

Sorry but some idiot walking near rail tracks that he should have been no where near isn't news & why report it as if we all should feel sorry for him or his family?
I lived in Freshfield Rd for 21years & never once tried or wanted to try to walk across or near the rail tracks so sorry but he got hit for trespassing big deal!
So if you have any genuine information on this we have to go by it being some guy trying to take a short cut alongside electrified lines & if that's so I have no sympathy for him
Look I see no reason for you to attack people like me when surely this guy was breaking the law & for what?
A Short Cut?
what Short Cut?
either this article should have never been printed( in case of attempted suicide) or the guy & his family shouldn't expect any sympathy for attempting to break the law.
would you feel sorry for him/them if he was burgling your home & fell out of a window & survived?
they're both breaking the law so sorry unless proven to be more than a Short Cut I think he4 got just punishment
Pathetic.
the emergency services had to be called because some one decided to take a short cut alongside busy Rail tracks has nothing to do with it then?
Surely if Kids were running across the tracks or a busy motor way what you'd feel sorry for them if they got hit?
I have said twice now three times if this was a suicide attempt I feel sorry for him & he needs help not an article in the local paper.
What right has a bleeding heart like you got to come on here & say this rubbish?
I suppose if he was lobbing concrete off of a motorway bridge onto on coming traffic & fell you would feel sorry for him?

No bleeding heart here; I'd rather wait for the facts to come out before I judge and condemn some poor, terribly injured individual.
It's called good sense and humanity, both attributes that you plainly lack.
Keep up the good work meat head.

Just a thought from a reader who rarely posts here, maybe before reporting a death on a quiet friday evening you could check your facts first. Putting your career aside for 5 minutes to gain factual information is the very least we should expect from a local newspaper.
