WINCHESTER College has been named as one of the most powerful schools in Britain.
The private school placed second only to Eton in a national survey for former pupils high up in politics, the arts, business and charities , among other areas.
It follows work by education charity The Sutton Trust, which analysed the backgrounds of 7,637 people whose birthdays were listed in a national newspaper last year. Eton had the most powerful former pupils, with 330 in influential positions, while Winchester College had 92, 18 more than third-placed Charterhouse School, Surrey.
Notable former pupils of the college are Lord Howe, Lord Hannay and Peter Jay, former ambassador to the USA.
