A MAN has been blinded in one eye after he was assaulted at a popular nightclub in Southampton city centre.

Dean Defretas, 47, was punched in the face which led to a brawl breaking out inside the Cellar bar, formally the Soul Cellar, in West Marlands Road.

Police, who have released CCTV images of people they want to speak to, said Dean was out with family members and workmates to celebrate Christmas when he was punched in the face by a man.

The blow, which officers say was unprovoked, caused a serious injury to his left eye.

He has since undergone surgery at the specialist Eye Unit at Southampton General Hospital but has been told he has permanently lost the sight in his eye.

The attack happened at around 3am on Saturday, December 15.

Dean, who works at Southampton Docks, remains in hospital following the surgery.

Officers are appealing for witnesses who saw any of the incident or thinks they know who is responsible for the attack on Dean to contact them.

They are also releasing CCTV images of people they would like to speak to in connection with the assault. It is known they were in the bar around the time of the incident and may be important witnesses.

Anyone with information of who knows who the people in the CCTV stills may be, is asked to contact Detective Constable Gavin Jordan at Shirley CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

I was actually glassed in the face in a totally unprovoked attack in Southampton along with another girl so I actually have to disagree with this comment. I know several other people who have been set upon in similar attacks by these deranged individuals our society seems to produce more and more of these days.

Because some people go out & have a social life in the real world rather than spending their time trolling the echo website perhaps?. ;-)

Why not ? Can't someone go out for a Christmas meal with workmates and then have a drink afterwards without being a target for the feral scum ?

Deano is one of the most placid guys going.

I hope that they catch these vile creatures.

Hope you understand that this quote makes you sound very naive.

Obviously a terrible outcome, but 'unprovoked' attacks are very rare.

In the main there is usually a disagreement or verbal altercation that results in physical violence.

Or maybe it wasn't? Either way I wish him well. Too many aggressive young men in city centres charged up on cocaine with short fuses....

Cos not everyone is a boring git like you !
Well done moron. Two footed as usual with trademark sharp wit and insight.
andysaints007's comment may have been a bit tactless but he is right in one sense; just because this guy was out at 3am doesn't mean he was doing anything wrong, people keep different hours and have different lifestyles, I personally work till 11pm some nights and therefore 3am is not that late in my eyes. Just because he was out at this time doesn't mean he is somehow responsible for being the victim of this attack, I'm sure he was just out having a good time like most other people.

Um yes they are, some scum think it's ok to just rob and attack people.
I was on way home through Eastleigh one night when I was punched from behind and robbed by some morons and left with a broken nose and broken teeth.
I feel sorry for this guy, it could happen to anyone, case of wrong place wrong time (and sick scumbags)

Um, best you compare like with like. This wasn't a robbery this was a bar fight, preceded with a verbal altercation/exchange
