VOLUNTEERS at a Southampton church are today celebrating 50 years of helping the city’s poor.

Southampton City Mission has been delivering food, clothing and furniture through its various branches for the last half-century.

Now the charity has a team of about 70 volunteers and operates out of five food banks on several days of the week.

As the mission celebrates its golden jubilee, the head of the mission, Chris Davis, expects it to be around for another 50 years.

“With changes in benefits and reduction in wages the demand is getting even bigger,” he said.

“It has been getting busier rather than quieter. We couldn’t do what we do without the churches from across the city and without the volunteers.”
