Dutch cruise passengers hurt in Hampshire M3 crash near Fleet

Southampton-bound coach in motorway crash horror Southampton-bound coach in motorway crash horror

EIGHT people were injured after a coach heading to Southampton crashed down an embankment and overturned after the driver lost consciousness.

The vehicle, carrying cruise passengers due to set sail from the city, left the carriageway on the southbound M3 after the driver fell ill.

Fire crews had to rescue two people from the coach, which is registered in Holland and was carrying 26 passengers.

Police said five people had been taken to hospital following the crash, which happened shortly after 6pm near Fleet.

One of the injured suffered serious injuries, although they were not thought to be life-threatening. It is believed they had suffered a fractured or broken bone, although more details are not yet available.

The others taken to hospital were said to have sustained minor injuries.

Police closed the southbound M3 between junctions 4a and 5 while the recovery operation took place, causing serious tailbacks, but the motorway has now reopened.

Fire crews from across the county were sent to the scene shortly after 6.30pm, and Hampshire Fire and Rescue said its teams had extricated two people from the coach.

Crews from Rushmoor, Hartley Wintney and Basingstoke all attended, as well as the Special Equipment Unit based at Basingstoke and a senior officer.

Police said several people were treated on the scene.

It is understood those passengers who were not taken to hospital have been brought to Southampton, where they spent the night in a hotel ahead of their cruise today.

All on board were Dutch nationals.

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said today the three casualties taken to Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital's Emergency Department last night have now been discharged.

If nobody seriously hurt, that is a lucky escape if the coach is on its side.

yet another accident where no one was seriously hurt yet people had to be "cut free".... nice little earner for the fire brigade.... Echo... please make a note to make a headline the next time there is a serious accident where no one is badly hurt AND no one had to be "cut free" by the fire brigade. THAT would be a headline.....

silly comment, i'm sure there are many traffic accidents where people are trapped in mangled metal but otherwise unhurt, especially likely in the case of a coach, i remember visiting a fire station open day in the west country not so long ago where the firemen had bought a special metal cutting device out of their own money (for cutting people free) i don't think they get extra money for cutting you free

its not a silly comment... just read the articles and wait... you will be waiting a long time..... its a running joke at the Fire-stations.... They charge a fortune for cutting.

Why would they even need to cut people free from a coach unless they got mangled up with seat belts and stuff? Pretty sure that's what the breakable rear window is for.

MGRA.. Where does it say the passengers were cut free?
IT DOESN'T it says they were 'extricated' it is possible that HFRS had to remove the passengers through the windows or roof hatches.
HFRS do not cut people from vehicles for the fun of if and they do not get a big pay out for doing so and even if they did the personal are not on comission so it wouldn't make any difference to them.

I can't understand why you are so annoyed that people were "cut free"? Would you rather they just yank people out?

I was sat in this after dropping my husband off at Heathrow Airport moments after the incident and waited for 30 minutes before moving a few feet. We were directed off the M3 and instructed to follow the diversion signs. Unfortunately, the police had only put one sign out so minutes later I and other drivers found ourselves back on the M3 and sitting once again in the tailback for a further 2 hours, three hours in total. My point is, although this was an inconvenience for me and my elderly father we at least got home thinking that someone in the incident hadn't.... So does it really matter how the fire services and police got the passengers out and if they get paid extra, hopefully nobody who has already commented will be in this situation but if you are I'm sure you won't mind if they get paid extra for cutting you out if it saves your life

Why on earth are you arguing, we should be all grateful no one was killed, this had a potential to be a horrific lose of life.
Incidentally the only time the fire service will cut people free is if they are trapped by mechanical means, or if the injury dictates ie C spine injury and they will liaise with the fine people of the ambulance service before doing so.

MGRA, A tool like you may be useful to the fire service! Oh wait, they have probably turned you down hence the tw@ty comments.
The fire service do not charge for emergency calls in hampshire, either for fires or cutting people out of cars.
Un-injured people are often needed to be cut free from cars, they can be trapped by the steering wheel or foot pedals pushed into them by an impact, or even doors which are stuck due to the impact.
Slagging off any of the emergency services which equally do a great job makes you a pretty sad and pathetic individual.
No wonder you spend so much time with your friend Mr Echo Website.

It doesn't appear to have overturned as reported above, just gone down the embankment and now tilted at a bit of an angle. If it had overturned there would be no glass in the coach and there would be difficulty opening doors. As it is the fireman is using what appears to be an undamaged door. Nasty, I wouldn't have liked to be in it, but to claim it overturned is a gross exaggeration.

Overturned, as defined in the dictionary, is for an object to have tipped over either on its side or rotated at 180 degrees to its normal position

The Oxford Dictionary rather conveniently gives an example of useage by referring to a coach!

Definition of overturn
turn over and come to rest upside down: a coach hit a car and overturned.

What load of moronic, idiotic and inane comments on a serious story.
A sad reflection of what our society sees as important is the fact this story is relegated to such a low point and a story about fluoride in drinking water tops it.
I think that a coach going off the road into a ditch and only having a few waking wounded, plus one "serious" is a miracle, and praise must be given to the emergency services for their professionalism in dealing with it..

dolomiteman says...

Well said 'huckit P'.
HFRS, SCAS, the Police and other services who attend incidents do a great job in sometimes difficult circumstances and get little praise for it.
