Search called off after reports of someone jumping off Itchen Bridge, Southampton

Itchen Bridge Itchen Bridge

Emergency services will consider today whether to resume their search for a man who reportedly plunged from the Itchen Bridge.

The search was called off at 11.40pm last night more than five hours after the search began.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter, police launch and lifeboats were among those searching underneath the bridge after it was reported that someone had fallen into the water.

A spokesman for Hampshire Police said search teams would reassess the situation this morning.

Hold Up, Some ACTUALLY jumped?
did you ACTUALLY see this happen with your own eyes...
Dont get me wrong but these searches are on a regular basis week in week out, everytime someone has always stated '' someone saw this '' or '' someone told me this ''
and 9 times outta 10 its all proved to be false reports and that noone has jumped.

All due respect, if someone HAS jumped then i do hope that they are found safe and well, and as the search is still happening i hope its soon.

If its not then i hope the person who called up this report isnt stopping someone elsewhere dying when the helicopter/police/am
bulances could be somewhere needed....

Not asking for a load of abuse for this but seriously, think about the information, get the facts, before you pass on false information x

But other than

to '' someone was seen jumping ?

But you didnt see this? and you dont ACTUALLY know if it was true?

I think ive proved my point the you're clearly working on 'hear-say'

Com'on Echo, You cant post a story like this and not do live updates for everyone to make up their own stories of whats actually happening...

Yep! Thats exactly what im doing 'Moron'
The point being people are all for passing on information even when its not true!
What a waste of the time of the emergency services.
As said in my first post i hope this is not a false report and if someone has jumped then i hope thy are found.

The thing is Ted, there's all these stories that go around, and its all usually because of one person saying that things DEFINATELY happened when in reality, they dont know themselves. That one turns into twenty because it definately happened because 'she' said so..

my little brother and dad drove over the bridge at 5.55 and there was someone stood on the rails in the middle and then go to go back over at 6.15 and the bridge was closed i live not far from the bridge and the helicopter is that low i can see it stood in my front garden.

Well I only came on to read the story as it just flashed up, only to read an absolute disgraceful amount of juvenile comments from well what I can only describe as pond life. To all who have a heart and head here well done, to those who don't - Well I actually can't post what I want to write really, completely shocking! Just think if it was someone close to you, speculation or not. Society today for some is unbelievable!!!!

It may or may not be a false alarm. I am the bus driver who saw a male standing on the edge of the bridge, over the handrail at about the apex of the bridge. I put in an emergency call on my radio to call police and bridge, giving a description of all I saw. I hope, I pray that it was a false alarm. I fear it may not have been.

That somebody obviously doesnt read ALL of the comments on a post, Just jumps to the last few ?

Okay maybe 'proving my point' wasnt the words i should have used, maybe should have just said ' thats the way it goes '

Ya know, the story states that there has been a 'report' ie in simple terms; someones called up, told the police someones jumped from the bridge.
When infact ONLY the person who made that phone call knows if they actually saw them jump.
It may have even been just a report someone looked like they were jumping, its all still escalated way to far to say this happened for sure,, especially when they really dont know!

As stated in my first comment if you actually bothered to read it, I hope this wasnt a jumper and only a report of such thing, The services seemed to have all gone now so hopefully nothing come of it as there are no updates...

I'd just like to take this chance to say what a great job the emergency services did and how quick they were to respond.

Involved in the search were 2 RNLI RIBs, a UK Boarder Force RIB and a helicopter was assisting from above.

Southampton Harbour Master also joined the search and shortly after a UK Boarder Agency Cruiser arrived. Myself and a number of private craft owners assisted the search with Police officers posted at prominent locations on both side of the shore line.

An extensive search was conducted - I cannot confirm if any persons were found.

It appeared as if the search was called off at approximately 21:30.

When i read about this on facebook the first thing that came to mind was 'i wonder how many silly comments there are on the Echo website', It happens everytime and the Echo must know this. The sensible thing would be to not open the story up to such comments

If you dont believe this, thats fine, but dont tell other people how they should feel! seriously selfish.
Not quite sure where DoonDoon is going with this quote to be honest... The only piece I find a little bit strange is the ' laugh it off ' comment.
Everyone has the right to feel what they like, agreed, but I guess in society most people follow a plateau of what some call normality, and I would put my bank balance ( which is poor at the mo, ha ) that the majority would not write sily obscenities. Good night all.
as i said i was talking in first person... as Westerngirl96 said everyone is just jumping to conclusions... someone said the someone's cat saw somebody on the bridge... who's to say who isnt related, everyone is different we all deal with things in different ways so i go back to what i originaly said, it's all very bigoted.

If this is true then maybe we should think about how awful this person must have felt. How possibly heartbroken, anxious and depressed they must have been in order to go to the bridge, stand on the edge and jump off; knowing that would be the end for them....

Think about that and then make a comment.

RIP

I live under the bridge and was told that a man threatening to jump from the bridge whilst being spoken to by the police. He then just jumped. They have not found him yet and there is a police launch still here today searching.

Please could some people have a little respect for what this man and now his family have to deal with. My thoughts are with his family and I hope he is found soon so that they can give him a proper burial. RIP.

Right with you on that one sparkster. Had a couple of dark moments in years gone by but managed to pull through, bl**dy hard though, and am thankful for the experience in the way it shapes my views today.
Reading the story that the search is back on, I really feel for those connected to this poor person, a lost soul in desperate need for help. Very sad start to the year. R.I.P fella..

You are an absolute disgrace to the human race. I hope for your sake something like this never happens to you or one of your loved ones.. Remember Karma is a very cruel lady so when your days comes just remember the quote you made in the wake of someone feeling so low they took their own life. Echo you are equally guilty. You have a duty of care with regards to what is published in your name. Have you no concern for this poor mans friends and family?? you have the email address for bazzeroz ban them from posting on your site at least. Absolutely sickened by the mentality of some people here.
