Alan Whitehead accuses PM of 'fiddling while the country floods'
11:10am Thursday 10th January 2013 in News
By Tom Moseley, Parliamentary Correspondent
Alan Whitehead.
A Southampton MP has accused the Prime Minister of “effectively abandoning” attempts to strike a deal with insurers on future cover for households.
Speaking during Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday, Alan Whitehead, the Labour MP for Southampton Test, said people were worried about whether their homes would be covered when the current arrangement runs out in June.
It follows severe flooding in recent weeks which has hit parts of Hampshire over the past month.
Dr Whitehead asked: “Why is the Prime Minister fiddling while the country floods?”
Responding, David Cameron said: “The discussions are still under way. They have made very good progress. “I am confident that we will reach an agreement.”
The Prime Minister said he had seen the effects of flooding in his own Oxfordshire constituency, adding that the Government had put in an extra £120m for flood defences.
Last month parts of the New Forest and the village of Wallington near Fareham were hit badly by flooding after torrential rain.
Roads around Brockenhurst were impassable after the River Lymington burst its banks while Ringwood and Fordingbridge, which are both on the River Avon, were hit too.
Police shut roads in Wallington and evacuated homes as rising water levels threatened to overwhelm flood defences.
Many villagers spoke of their fears about whether they would be able to re-insure their homes against flooding if the Government failed to reach an agreement with insurers.
Insurers have called on the Government to provide a temporary overdraft facility to pay claims for 200,000 high-risk households in the event of serious flooding.
They have accused ministers of rejecting the proposals.
But Floods Minister Richard Benyon has insisted the Government remains “determined” to reach a deal and that it was a “priority” for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Alan Whitehead is well known as a campaigner on environmental issues and represents a Constituency that is bordered on two sides be WATER.
Your nasty, petty little Tory mind just can't allow any comment (however valid) from a Labour MP without trying to invent a story against them.

Just because he is a Southampton MP, does not mean that he is not allowed to raise questions on both National and International issues.
I imagine that you would not be making a similar post if he were questioning our relationship with Europe.
Could it possibly be that you just want to take a cheap shot at Dr Whitehead because he is not one of your beloved Tories?

I went to several meetings he was holding with his constituents but if you asked him a question about anything he didn't want to hear you got fobbed off.
I was a floating voter but after a couple of those meetings I knew I'd never vote for him.
This city has many problems like Oaklands pool where was he standing up for his electorate?
He said nothing against Williams party why?
Yet here he is going on about flood areas in Hampshire?
So why not increase all council rents all over the country send the extra to the insurance companies & they can use it to cover floods?
This bloke is a joke I hated the Tory MP before him & I can't stand Whitehead, He wouldn't help a thousand workers save their jobs in his constituency so sorry your an idiot for supporting the joke of an MP

Maybe he could fight to stop pubs becoming Supermarkets or fight to get fixed rents on students accommodation,
or fight to stop planning permission to be given to have good family homes demolished to have a block of flats built or HMO's.
any of those & I would congratulate him but with all the mess this Labour council have got us into he could fight as Caroline Nookes is fighting to get us a better deal or don't you think that is why he was voted in?

Whitehead would not answer questions on the break up of the NHS local issues (which was a national issue) when the Labour Party was incontrol on National Government and the Torys incontrol of local Government the only help there was over the mentle health NHS issue was from a Tory MP Lewis who was a band wagon jumper and would only show up at meetings or send a representive when members of the press was at the meetings, the only political party that attended all meetings and was the first to fight the cause was the Socialist Party they manage to keep crowling house open, which this Tory government is slowly running it down so they will be able to close it down at a later date.

If a council raises its tax, the government reduces its grant by the same amount.
I appreciate that, as a devoted admirer of Dodgy Dave, you like to turn a blind eye to that fact, and prefer to blame the previous government and the recently elected Labour City Council.

You have still not given any answer to where the money will come from to pay teachers, social workers, dustmen, etc. if the TUSC 'No Cuts' slogan became the council’s policy.
It is central government that controls how much local authorities can spend and if the budget is cut (as it has been) then a No Cuts policy is not economically or financially possible.
I gave you chance after chance to inform us all where the money would come from to pay the wages, but all you did, time and time again, was waffle, procrastinate and NOT answer the question.

The only political partys that will do good for the majority is a true left wing party, all right wing partys favour the wealthy, the Torys would be one of the lest to help working class people, and Labour have gone the same way now, and joined the Tory gravy train they have forgotten who they are ment to represent and who the party. was built to represent. And that is why the TUSC was formed its a working class party, it designed to represent the majority and not the few, It will do what Labour should be doing and that is listening to people and representing them, to be honest about it all, the Socialist Party and the TUSC are doing more for the people than any other polictical party where they are willing to put up a fight.
Loose its not the rank and file of the Unions that are saying what you said, union exc like Tucker we have a problem with because of his right wing leadership.
no we did not have thing like sure start but we did have other things like the health care centers for babys where you was taking to while still in your nappy to have check ups, we had the nit lady that use to go round the schools, we use to have play schools where kids learn how to socialise with other kids, there was a lot of things we had that we don't have now, that sure start was meant to cover

There is no need for cuts, making cuts only damage the economy and then you have got to make cuts again.
Here some thing to waste you time on, looking up the info, with all the cuts that have been made so far this country deficit as been pass so why are they still asking for more cuts.
I tell you why, its to divert more public tax money into private hands.

'No Cuts' means the council spends at least the same as the previous year.
But, central Government HAS cut the income of the council.
This means the money runs out before the end of the year - it's very simple arithmetic.
Given this truth, how will you actually pay the wages and other bills when the bank account is empty?
This is at least the sixth time I have asked, and you still have not come anywhere near to actually answering.
Stop the waffle and tell us where the money is coming from in this real world we all inhabit.

No Cuts is just the slogan like you said it is not the policy just a slogan for the policy to make it easy for people to understand.
And you been told over and over again "Needs Budget" aka a needs program aka comunity needs budget they all mean the same just saying it differently.

Above, and several times in the past few months I have asked you to be truthful about the TUSC ‘No Cuts’ slogan. If this policy was put into effect I calculate that the council coffers would be well and truly empty by mid-February at the latest.

And you been told over and over again "Needs Budget" aka a needs program aka comunity needs budget they all mean the same just saying it differently.
So we are back to the SAME problem. Your slogan/policy will require more expenditure than the council receives by way of income. Simple arithmetic; shouldn’t even be beyond your limited abilities to understand.
When you say I “do you know how much is in the council coffers, and how much is coming in and what is going out how much is in reserves, how much they can borrow ect ect ect.” you are truly showing your ignorance yet again.
Coming from someone who: -
a) insists that Council Tax goes direct to central government and only small amount comes back to local authority (Echo, 26 August 2012).
b) totally failed to understand the contents of the council’s 'Draft Financial Statements 2011/12' and 'Financial Statements 2010/11' by getting every statistic wrong when trying to quote details prove his already discredited position (Echo, 27 August 2012).
I think you have yet again shot yourself in the foot. I am fully conversant with accountancy, council accounts and more or less anything financial. You, however, ….
Now, when will you answer the question of how you will fill the shortfall in income to effect your ‘No Cuts’ slogan?

I imagine that you would not be making a similar post if he were questioning our relationship with Europe.
Could it possibly be that you just want to take a cheap shot at Dr Whitehead because he is not one of your beloved Tories?
Maybe he could fight to stop pubs becoming Supermarkets or fight to get fixed rents on students accommodation,
or fight to stop planning permission to be given to have good family homes demolished to have a block of flats built or HMO's.
any of those & I would congratulate him but with all the mess this Labour council have got us into he could fight as Caroline Nookes is fighting to get us a better deal or don't you think that is why he was voted in?
To Fight For This City?
You now want him to cure, not just the city's ills, but the country's as well.
If you are looking for perfection, then I am sure that 'Nookie' Nokes will not let you down.
It is you who apparently objected to him doing so by asking, "Isn't Whitehead a Southampton MP? why isn't he fighting for us & not the rest of Hampshire"
You now appear to be doing an 'about turn' and agree that he has national responsibilities as well as local ones, which is the point that I was making.
My mother was a Labour supporter she voted Labour up till the time Whitehead stood for election she did not trust the guy & since he got voted in nor do I.
Look at the parties. Tories if you work then vote for them.
Labour up to this moment with their broken promises on welfare reform if your unemployed or never have tried to work vote for them. mind you all the companies that came here to the UK under the Major Government many then left when Labour took over.
Then we have the Liberals? vote for them & then be ruled by Germany.
UKIP some of what they say is more like old Labour than any right wing party yet don't seem to be fighting in Labour areas?
TUSC exactly how bad can we get if we vote for them? BNP say they have black members really?
I vote for the Party that's going to be best for me as I hear constantly how it's gimme gimme like the council workers some of who have said on this website that they should have got rid of jobs not cut pay? that's from Union members or "Brothers"/ "Comrades" so sorry to listen to certain people on these posts slagging off Tory voters is a joke.
to have some saying raise council tax is even worse why the hell should the tax payers pay more?
Why not cut welfare payments to all who refuse any jobs? Labour has said this is what this Government should do but they might not do it( Labour)
Why not shut Sure Starts? didn't need them when we were young did they?
No I don't propose shutting them I was just asking the question?
One minute you want Whitehead to concentrate on Southampton's issues, and the next you you are saying that he has National responsibilities.
When I bring this to your attention, you start talking about Brian Gould, who emigrated to Australia twenty or more years ago and how your mother used to vote Labour.
Have a nice Weekend Linesman
