P&O scrap visit to three Argentine ports as tensions over Falkland Islands grow

Southampton-based cruise ships diverted from Argentina Southampton-based cruise ships diverted from Argentina

TWO Southampton-based cruise ships are being forced to divert from Argentina as tensions over the Falkland Islands grow.

P&O has scrapped visits to three Argentine ports after the country failed to guarantee permission for their ships to dock there if they had been to the Falklands.

The Southampton-based company have now stopped their ships Arcadia and Adonia from docking there during their round-the-world cruises.

A P&O spokesman said: “As a British cruise company we cannot allow ourselves to be the subject of any political dispute or put our customers and crew into any situation where their enjoyment may be compromised.

“With this in mind, we have had to take the difficult decision to remove all Argentinian ports of call from the itinerary.”

The ships will now not dock in Buenos Aires, Puerto Madryn and Ushuaia.

It comes as tensions over the islands continue between London and Buenos Aires.

Argentine President Cristina Kirchner has stepped up her campaign to get Prime Minister David Cameron to hand over the Falkland Islands and a referendum of the 3,000 islanders is set for March.

By not going to Argentine ports it not causing any problems for the shipping line but depriving the Argies. of much needed money from visitors, good, stay away and let their economy flounder even more.

Who'd want to live in the grim far south Atlantic anyway? Turn the Falklands into an international nature reserve with no permanent human population, British or Argentinian.

Actually the Bennies do like living there, why should they be uprooted just because the Argies want the oil supplies in their waters. Oh dear I forgot we are not supposed to call them Bennies anymore, they are to be called Stills (still Bennies)

And what about the Falklanders for a start? Nobody is forcing them to stay are they? But they do. Because they want to. What if you were born and raised there, your home is there, your family are there, your kids are there? your friends and everything you know is there? Does that count for nothing? What you have suggested puts you on a par with Stalin.

The 3,000 Falkland Islanders have the right to self determination under the UN Charter - this is something the secretary General Ban Ki-Moon confirmed back in November. Argentina, again, is acting as the 'bully'. Does Canada have a problem with St. Pierre & Miquelon? Does the Dominican Republic have a problem with Puerto Rico? Does Morocco have a problem with the Canary Islands. The answer is no in each case so why does Argentina have a problem with the Falkland Islands - the islands are 400 miles away from its coast, so what is the problem. Perhaps the answer is that most Argentines have been brought up with a diet of propaganda and lies about the history of the islands - British since 1765 . Argentine politiciansd are always quick to use the 'Great Malvinas Lie' when their economy is about to falter - and falter it will when the IMF drop the red card on them for producing inaccutare information on GDP and inflation. Argentine government inflation = 10% but independent analysts believe the figure is over 25%. Bring on the red card penalties.

You will have herds of fans in the Falklands! Let them decide, not someone who would be totally unaffected.

You appear to be one of Mrs Thorpes bigoted inbred cretins. The lawful inhabitants of the Falklands are descendants of the people who emigrated there after the British gumment PURCHASED the islands from the Dutch, who had won them from the Spanish. They have NEVER belonged to Argentina and there has been no colonialism since the Spanish ownershjp. The previous inhabitants included no human beings
