decent head teachers will try and keep primary schools open tomorrow but many secondary schools will be unsafe due to the nature of their footprint and closure is sensible and kids can work online.

A covering of snow and the country grinds to a halt. 40 years ago I was sent home from school when it snowed, but only because the heating had broken down and nothing to do with the actual weather. Otherwise it was school as normal and, when I started working in the late seventies, it was still possible to get to work AND travel by bus from my New Forest village to the centre of Southampton where the office was. We have all become too soft ... or is it the Health & Safety police causing everything to shut down ... or possibly the privatisation of essential services? This is the third winter we have had snow in the south and the third winter when we seem unable to cope.

The difference between a school and a shop is that the headteacher cannot open the school and let the children in unless he has enough staff on site to supervise them by the time the children arrive. Struggling in by 10 o'clock is not enough. Most children live within walking distance of their school but teachers drive from much further away.
