SERIOUSLY ill children fighting for their lives have a better chance of survival if they are treated in Southampton.
Latest figures have revealed that the paediatric intensive care unit at Southampton General Hospital has the best recovery rate in the country.
As part of the audit, each hospital receives a score based on how ill patients are and how many survive, known as the standardised mortality ratio, with hospitals expected to meet the average of 1.0.
If the number is lower it shows a better than average survival rate – and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust’s score is 33 per cent lower at 0.67.
The data has also shown that 62 per cent of children who need specialist treatment, ECMO, after heart surgery in Southampton survive compared to the international average of less than 50 per cent.
