£100k boost for libraries following cuts (From Daily Echo)

£100,000 out of £5 million doesn't sound that much to me, wonder where the other £4,900,000 is going and how much is being put aside in the 'emergency fund' ??

Labour are still planning cuts to Libraries. This is despite their fully costed manifesto saying:

LABOURS PROMISE
2. We will keep local libraries and Sure Start centres open and expand the services they offer.

Labour fully knew the financial situation of the Council when making this promise - in fact their financial situation is now £5M better off thanks to central government so there can be no excuses for Labour not sticking to their word and the manifesto they were elected on!

Local Conservatives never made a promise they didn't keep...

I wonder if you can give a list of the libraries and Sure Start centres that are actually closed

The exact amount allocated from the central Government pot wasn't announced until 24th December 2012 by Eric Pickles Communities & Local Government Dept,,so unless they've had a crystal ball in the Civic Centre how could they have known the amount in May 2012,,,as it goes SCC got an extra £5 million in the 24th December announcement,,,which I suppose Steve Galton you knew all about as well.

Perhaps a small part of the windfall could be used to save the Archaeolgy Unit?

outside of the box the Tory council budgeted for a 345million cut in the budget & no cut to services & not as many job cuts as Labour has already announced so exactly how much has Labour had the budget cut?
take away what they're saving on refuse collection how much less is the cut than what the Tories budgeted for?

Loose there was not alot of diffences between Tory and Labour cuts, just that Labour was the lesser of the evils

Perhaps if they do close or reduce the opening hours you will indeed embrace the Tory prime ministers (aka Mr Slippery) vision and show how much YOU are a part of the "Big Society" and volunteer your time to help keep at least one open.

Lone Ranger - I am not a Councillor, I attempted to become a Conservative Councillor for Millbrook in May 2012 but was beaten by the Labour Councillor who amongst other things campaigned on her parties manifesto - hence my personal feelings on what is turning out to be outright lying and with hindsight nothing more than a Labour election tactic (something already conceded by a senior Labour cabinet member during a scrutiny meeting I attended as a member of the public).

My point was reducing library hours and spending is not what was promised or insinuated by Labour when they knew the budget situation - no party knew prior to the recent revelation that actually there was nearly £6M more money available than had previously been anticipated - so both parties manifestos and commitments were originally made/set on a WORSE financial situation than we actually find ourselves in - this to me makes it even more spurious that Labour plan to do what they do and I honestly can't see how Southampton Labour can justify their actions when they refuse to keep the promises they made.

Totally agree with you! Have been trying to get that over on many articles but they won't listen.
the insinuations of what the then Tory Council would do if they retained power are really now showing what out & out lies they were.
I look at Lidls where the Labour Councillor for that ward was against it & attacked the Tories for wanting it.
the Labour councillors who go to the Channel Island estate residents meetings supposedly were backing the residents against it ( not all residents as I was for it) yet they swept aside those promises to oppose it & voted for it?

Mr Galton ........ Having again read the Tory manifesto and reminded myself of the Labour manifesto i can post you what they print in relation to Libraries and Sure Start.

Conservatives:- We are ensuring that important front line services are maintained, keeping OPEN all our Sure Start centres, libraries and protecting the weekly bin collections and budgets for looking after vulnerable residents and repairing the roads and pavements.

Labour:- We will keep local libraries and Sure Start centres open and expand the services they offer.

Neither say that these will be with or without reduced hours.

okay 5m from the lottery.5m from fund raising,5m the council.which was for a back log of repairs left from the previous administration & had to be done as the building is a listed building so exactly was the refuse workers pay used for the Sea City Museum? who's the liar again?
