ALCESTER residents are about to increase the amount of household waste they can recycle.

Currently Stratford district recycles more than 60 per cent of its waste, but a recent renewal of the council’s contract with Biffa Waste Services, means that residents will soon be able to recycle far more on their doorstep, including textiles, spent batteries, and small electrical goods.

According to Stratford District Council, the extended contract is also set to save £400,000 each year from the budget for the next nine years.

Councillor Lynda Organ, technical services portfolio holder, said: “This is a win-win situation all round – recycling more for less money, what’s not to like about that? This is a great opportunity to enhance what are already highly regarded front-line council services. The cabinet has considered a number of options including sharing a service with another local authority but were convinced that the Biffa proposal offered the best value for residents.”

The precise details of the service are still being decided, but the council is hoping to roll out the new extended service from April.
