TRADE unions from across the south will converge on Southampton city centre today as they battle the worst cuts ever.

Under the banner of “Stand up on the South Coast”, the protesters will meet at the Guildhall at 11.45am before rallying outside WestQuay shopping centre.

Organiser Darren Proctor said: “There are a lot of cuts in Southampton that are going to have big knock-on effects in the community.”

The council is planning to make the most wide ranging cuts the city has ever seen.

Among those hit are youth services, evening and weekend bus subsidies, library services and huge care charge hikes are planned for disabled adults.

Southamptn city council is planning up to £20 million worth of cuts to services.

They are due to decide which services will be cut at a budget meeting next month.
