PRINCE Edward, is in Winchester today open a new multi million pound university building and unveil a huge bronze portrait of his mother, the Queen.
The sculpture will be housed in the city’s Great Hall and is to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Measuring 6ft in diameter, it has been paid for by donations from the public, with help from Winchester City and Hampshire County Council.
It features an engraving of the Queen wearing a necklace and diamond tiara, with the Hampshire Rose forming a frame around her face.
Hampshire’s Lord-Lieutenant, Dame Mary Fagan, commissioned the bronze and got approval from Buckingham Palace before going ahead with the plans.
The sculptor, Vivien Mallock is from Andover and has been responsible for several pieces throughout the county, including the Golden Jubilee sculpture unveiled by the Queen herself at Portsmouth’s Gunwharf Quays.
Prince Edward will also open the universtiy's new £6m building St Alphege, a state-of-the-art learning and teaching building.
