Ursula's picture scoops top award
A Hampshire school pupil has scooped an international photography award with a picture of her school silhouetted against a sunset.
Eight-year old Ursula Baynes saw off competition from across the globe with her picture, called “Sunset Staircase”.
The girl from Romsey took the photo at her school’s photography club while they were taking picture in the school grounds.
She won the UK scenery section of the National Geographic International Photography Contest 2012 for Children with her photograph.
Her photo is featured in National Geographic Kids magazine.
“I was really amazed to have won the competition and felt excited and proud to see my photograph printed in the magazine,” Ursula said.
The Year 8 pupil won an adventure camera for her efforts and her entry now goes forward to the international contest against entries from all around the world.
Her success has spurred her on to consider taking more photographs and being more creative.
Her school said that she is now doing a watercolour painting of the photograph.
Ursula’s art teacher at Hampshire Collegiate School, Andrew Brooks, said: “The theme for Ursula’s photograph was contrast. She has always shown great promise and we are delighted her talents have been recognised in this competition.”
