Traffic lights out at busy Southampton junction

Traffic lights have failed at a major Southampton junction.

The signals are down at the junction of Archers Road and Hill Lane due to an electrical fault, causing slow moving traffic during the morning rush hour.

A spokeswoman from Southampton City Council said: “It appears that yesterday evening both us and the Police were alerted to the fact that the signals kept going off and on again.

“An engineer went to the site and determined that it appeared to be an electrical controller fault and as it was a wet evening the safest action was to turn them completely off and bag them until a repair could be carried out in the morning.”

Engineers are in the process of repairing the lights.

How many power stations are required to provide electricity for the multitude of traffic lights in Southampton?

I hazard to guess that with the lights out traffic is moving smoothly and safely! when will someone turn them all off and prove that traffic lights cause congestion and accidents?

Indeed. In a lot of cases like this, "slow moving traffic" is an improvement.

Given that "An engineer went to the site and determined that it appeared to be an electrical controller fault", what information do you have that the engineer in attendance didn't? Just because two lamps are out doesn't necessarily mean that they are the root cause.

Dear Southampton City Council,

PLEASE turn these lights off permanently! Traffic flows without traffic lights and people can even cross the road without waiting 6minutes!

This is called using your brain and negotiating not blindly waiting for a green light! Please see the following youtube link to a town in chesire who have removed their traffic lights - and guess what - traffic flows smoother!!!!
