Motorists in Hampshire are being reminded to keep their vehicles secure following a spate of thefts from cars and vans in the town.

Since the beginning of the year there have been several thefts from vehicles parked in different areas across Aldershot, including military land.

Safer Neighbourhoods Team Sergeant Graeme Hughes said: “It seems some people are leaving their vehicles unlocked to avoid them being damaged by criminals attempting to break in. This is certainly not advisable. Please make sure your vehicle is left secure at all times. The simple message is lock it or lose it.

“I would also urge people not to leave valuables in their vehicles. All too often sat navs, handbags and laptops are left on show and opportunist thieves then strike.”

Officers have conducted operations to identify vulnerable vehicles – those left unlocked or where valuables have been left on show.

Many vehicles were identified as vulnerable this sort of crime and the registered owners of these vehicles have been sent letters advising them of some simple security precautions to take to avoid becoming a victim of vehicle crime.

Extra patrols are already taking place and these will continue. Officers will also be conducting proactive cycle patrols in areas across the town.

If you see anyone behaving suspiciously or looking into vehicles, please contact Aldershot Police Station on 101 or 999 if a crime is in progress.
