A TASER is described as a “less lethal” weapon used by police officers in situations where once a firearm may have been used to deal with a violent or lifethreatening situation.

They can also be used to deal with people thought to be carrying a dangerous weapon who could endanger their life or that of others.

The Taser releases an electric shock that can temporarily incapacitate a person.

They are different to stun guns, which have to have direct contact with the skin to take effect. Currently only specialist firearms officers and a small number of police officers are able to carry the weapon.
