Father jailed after drunken fracas in pub

A FATHER of two has been jailed for 15 months following a fracas at a pub in which he struck one man with a beer glass and punched another.

Darren Baker, 39, was thrown out of the Tavern pub in Romsey after cutting the head of another customer with the glass. He then punched a window which broke and then punched a second man. Baker, of Pennine Road, Millbrook, Southampton, was convicted at Winchester Crown Court of affray but admitted criminal damage.

Passing sentence, Recorder Anthony Davies QC told Baker, who had 23 previous convictions for 68 offences including affray, wounding and violent disorder, that only a custodial term was justified.

“This affray involved physical violence and not the threat of it. You used a glass as a weapon. This was not an isolated outburst.”

In mitigation, David Reid said the first victim had not made a complaint and the injury wasn’t serious.

“It must have been a spur of the moment act,” he said.
