Nick Clegg at Eastleigh College.
DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg today asked Eastleigh voters to judge the party on its local record.
Visiting the constituency to canvas with Liberal Democrat hopeful Mike Thornton, Mr Clegg said Huhne's resignation was a personal matter for the disgraced MP, describing the case as “a private matter that has been played out in a public way”.
Huhne stepped down last week immediately after admitting to perverting the course of justice, sparking a by-election on February 28.
Mr Clegg said the former Eastleigh MP had performed well during his time representing the seat.
He said: “Everybody will tell you he was extremely good for the local consistency.”
But Mr Clegg said the focus should now be on the local Liberal Democrat performance in Eastleigh Borough Council, which he said had protected green spaces, kept council tax down and created jobs, including 500 at the Ageas Bowl cricket ground.
He also said he felt it was the party's duty to hold the by election as quick as possible so that the residents of Eastleigh and surround area were not left without an MP.
During his whistle-stop tour, he also Eastleigh College alongside Lib Dem candidate Mike Thornton and spoke with young apprentices.

Huhne should be made to give back every penny he has received in. So called wages. As an MP since the incident happened.

The 'local record' is that the MP was a criminal, engaged in an extra marital affair, forced tens of thousand of tax payers £'s to be needlessly spent on a court case, put his career before his own children, and was a fully paid up member of a party that is happy to accept votes yet does a complete U turn on its promises. The latest farce of a LibDem party political broadcast claiming to have put £600pa back in people's pockets is frankly insulting, have they forgotten that they voted in the 5% VAT increase and have failed to control the rapidly escalating cost of living which has wiped out that measly £600? Time for change I suggest, I know a number of friends and family who will be using their vote to register their disgust at all of the big three, I only hope that others will recognise the opportunity for change that UKIP offers.

Surely even Clegg should know that this is not election for seat in local council, but is parliamentary by election.
Yes same parliament to which he and his unprincipled mates like Huhne were elected because they made certain pledges in their manifesto, which they broke for securing ministerial limos perks and salaries.
Is it not bit odd that Huhne could very rightly end behind bars because he lied about driving a car, but the rest of Liberal Democrats are still sitting in Parliament and other positions of power although they lied to whole nation in their manifesto during last election?
If there is no law to throw such liars in jail then now under our democratic system voters of Eastleigh could deliver the verdict by refusing to vote lousy Lib Dem

You wanted to scrap tuition fees, but went with the Conservatives and raised these to £9000.
You don't support the future generation, so why should we support you?

I have come to the conclusion that anybody who votes for a Liberal Democrat needs a reality check,look at the facts,the 2 main people at the top are totally useless,the leasder is a total plank whose only claim to fame is in his words the fact that he has slept with a considerasble amount of women,all he other actions are pretty despicable,doing u turns to suit his ego,supporting a criminal (hulne) who everybody in the country knew was guilty,supporting that toe rag David Laws,who was feathering his boy freinds nest at our expense,Clegg the plank would have both these unsavoury toe rags back in the government (absolutely amazing)I have yet to come across a Liberal Democrat who represents the people and not their own ego and yes Vince Cable is another egotistical member of the bearded sandal brigade AKA The Liberal Democrat party.They continually let the people of Eastleigh down,do not let them have the chance to do it again!!!!

I saw the Liberal being interviewed on telly to day.
he was a close friend & supporter of Huhne's.
He disagrees with all the coalition stands for but will tow the Party line if elected so exactly who's policy is he standing for?

I hope you people of Eastleigh vote Tory but I'm a bit annoyed at people like MGRA's scare mongering about UKIP.
the Tory Party has said it will run a clean campaign on the Governments progress so far,
they said they will fight the election on Tory principles & proposals so as a Tory I will not talk absolute nonsense about a World War three in Europe if it breaks up.
have you not taken much notice of the former Yugoslavia where countries were forced together under Tito & what happened when those countries could only become free by acts of war?
Let Germany carry on building a greater Germany with France giving in at every point.
do pro EU supporters remember what happened to Ireland ,Greece & many other countries that at the time needed high interest rates?
Germany needed them lowered for Exports so who do you think got it their way ?was it four countries or was it the power of the EU?

I really get annoyed by people who lied to get a yes vote & still lie about what would happen if we left an organisation we never joint.
The Euro? Eurozone? European parliament? European Flag? European courts? European Human rights Court?
Please tell me where in that referendum we were told this would happen?
we were led a lie that we would be a sovereign country trading with other sovereign countries so please .please tell me when we voted for what we are now in & then tell me who the loons are or should I say liars are?
Unless UKIP could win an election I will vote Tory here in Southampton but this is Eastleigh & a bi-election.

Lib Dem phoning me at 7pm tonight, got the sharp end of my anger same as any cold caller gets when harassing me by phone. What a way to alienate voters. If I was going to vote lib dem that call would of changed my mind. But as a self employed tradesman and shop owner my vote's for UKIP.

Saw a French MP on telly today she said she is the only French MP that wants Britain to stay in the EU the rest want us out & that is also the feelings of most of the EU countries so let's leave with our £14billion ( now more) a year & see how they recoup that loss to the EU budget?

as I've posted above a French MP said the French want us out & so do the majority of the EU,
we had the leader of Plaid Cymri saying Wales wanted to stay in because of the money it gets from the EU? she seems to forget it's money from the UK she gets back & it's not that much she also wants Independence?
SNP want independence but want to be ruled from Germany ? shock horror they'll have to reapply on different terms bye,bye oil revenue,
When a Tory said we could still trade with you but don't have to be in the EU she got upset as to how it would effect the EU budget especially CAP,
as Scotland would find out if it does breakaway the only thing the EU would want from them is their money. Only if we get a UKIP MP will this change the major Parties attitude as they don't listen to us do they?
do you think it's right that we can't ban products that are labelled wrongly if it comes from with in the EU ? I don't !

Within geographical Europe there are two very successful countries who do not belong to the EU. These countries are Norway and Switzerland. Both countries continue to trade with their EU neighbours. Yes, the cost of living is higher in both countries ... but it is also higher in some EU countries like Sweden. Is it not the FibDems who plane to build 3000 new home on Stoneham Park, in Botley, in Hedge End, all of which are green open spaces, not brown field sites, GREEN sites. Was it not the FibDems who were in direct talks with Sainsburys to build a new store on the rec at a cost of 50 trees and 5000 square feet of green space. Was it not the FibDems who want to build 27 flats on Grantham Green in Eastleigh at the cost of the only green open space in the south of the Borough. Shall I go on.!! Pretecting green spaces.. As honest as their MP about driving offences me thinks.!!

I would also like to see something more than EU from them though.
I've been told to go to UKIP website & read they're manifesto but unless Scotland break away & we are no longer the UK & we don't then say the UK voted us in & there's no longer a UK so we're out I won't be voting for UKIP at the next general election but like you I'd like to see them win a by-election just to scare the other parties

Being slightly left of centre in my Political convictions, I don't see a Party Candidate that I like, wouldn't it be great if all candidates were judged on their CV rather than their Political Party line, I have no respect for the present Coalition Government, but I don't see any viable alternative on the horizon, so I say Vote for None of the Above.

For get about the EU offer they got, they are not the only party offering that, but take a look at there plans of selling of any thing that belongs to the state which is you and what you and every else owns, the NHS, RM and other state owned, it will drive up unemployment and end up costing people more in the long run.

Why should someone on the dole have a two bedroom property when there's only either one person or a husband & wife leaving the empty room empty?
I've been on homebid & I as a married man are only allowed to bid for a one bedroom flat.
Surely anyone who want's a council home should accept that two bedrooms & more should be for families with children not childless couples or single people if they get a job they don't lose anything even this I think is wrong.
I have a neighbour who said he was living there when his dad was alive & he took over a two bedroomed house now he's on the dole is this right?
Maria come on surely get people to move to homes that are more in fitting with their actual needs is a better system than the above that I've mentioned?

How many programs have got jobs proposals & gone up to a group & offered them work only for every excuse going for them not to work?
tell me how Eastern Europeans can find work yet our people can't?
At this time where there's more people in work than ever before why have we got 2.4 million unemployed?
it use to be recognised that 1million were can't work but now we have on top of that 1million who won't work.
that woman ( ex student) wanted dole money but refused to work for nothing?
She was being paid by receiving welfare payments & building up a CV which should have helped her find a job but she wanted both?
I know of people who have more money to spend than I use to have & I was earning £45,000 a year & they were on invalidity pay so sorry I have no time for bleeding heart Liberals or Socialists.
my friend is moving from a two bed to a one bed as he can't work & doesn't need two bedrooms

The problem with the Lib Dems is that the excellent local councillors who have proven themselves time and time again have been let down by their Parliamentary Party! Their constitution gives the Parliamentary Party a disproportionate power over their party. The voters will never forgive them for the anti-English Student sell out. £9000 per year in England Free in Scotland and capped at £3,300 in Wales and Northern Ireland.
