MORE pedestrian-friendly streets form a major part of highway chiefs’ blueprint for a Hampshire market town.

The £475,000 for the project – known as Romsey Future – includes installing one-level pedestrian and vehicle shared surfaces in the town’s Market Place, Bell Street and Church Street.

Cash is coming from Hampshire County Council, Test Valley Borough Council and developer contributions.

There are also plans to repair and upgrade the tiled road surface in Church Place with the cash.

Also included in the Romsey Future project are plans to build new cycle route between Fishlake Meadows Road and Abbotswood, a new roundabout at Braishfield crossroads near Woodley Cemetery, making School Road at Woodley a no through road, putting in traffic-calming measures in Woodley Lane, and improving bus links between Abbotswood, Woodley and Romsey.

These features will be paid for from the £2.6m that the developers are putting into the 800-home Abbotswood housing estate.
