A DRIVER was seriously injured after a car came off a bridge on a major Hampshire road this morning.

The car left the bridge on the eastbound carriageway of the A303 at around 6am, landing on the A34 at the Bullington Cross interchange.

The male driver was freed by Hampshire Fire & Rescue.

Watch manager Chris Roper, of Winchester Fire Station, said: “A Ford Mondeo hit the side of the bridge and landed below on Bullington Cross on its roof. The male driver was seriously injured and was taken to hospital by ambulance.”

Three appliances and a special equipment unit attended from Winchester.

Although the A34 is still open, slip roads from the A303 onto the southbound A34 are closed and police and the Highways Agency are urging motorists to avoid the area.

Drivers wishing to join the southbound carriageway from both the westbound and eastbound A303 should join the northbound A34, leave at the next junction at Tufton near Whitchurch to turn and join the southbound A34 from there.

Police are investigating the incident and the slip roads are likely to be closed for the rest of the morning.
