Sir Menzies Campbell says party is not complacent over by-election prospects
1:10pm Tuesday 19th February 2013 in News
Sir Menzies Campbell with Lib Dem candidate Mike Thornton in Eastleigh.
Liberal Democrat big hitter Sir Menzies Campbell said his party cannot consider losing the Eastleigh by-election, as he joined the campaign trail yesterday.
The former Lib Dem leader was in Eastleigh, canvassing votes alongside the party’s candidate Mike Thornton.
The duo were knocking on doors in Arthur Road and The Quadrangle as the party looks to maintain a stronghold on the constituency, which has been represented by a Lib Dem MP for the past 19 years.
But Sir Menzies told the Daily Echo that this would not lead to complacency.
Sir Menzies said: “We don’t contemplate disasters, or losing. We are not in any sense complacent, that’s why we are working as hard as we are, putting so many resources into this by-election.”
Asked why residents should vote for Mr Thornton, Sir Menzies said: “Mike brings a lot of local knowledge, he brings a lot of common sense.
“I think he would be an outstanding representative for Eastleigh.”

As a socialist I have to be fair and give the credit where due.
The sheer cheek of hypocrites and habitual liars Lib-Dems has got to be admired.
Most decent people even after accidently misleading someone get embrassed and avoid seeing him/her in the eyes again.
But although having broken most of their pledges in manifesto of last election, by jumping in bed with Tories for ego ministerial money and perks these more slippery than even snakes have screwed the whole nation they are shameless enough to ask for trust through votes.
As the lowest form of political life these lizards and reptiles have no pride or principles they have slithered out of Tory bed in London and started appearing on voters door steps in Eastleigh.
Even priests and prostitutes may have some principles and good at keeping secrets (I was told that once by a senior police officer) but although Lib Dem are in bed with Tories, in Eastleigh they are spewing poison against their own partners.
Not exactly very faithful are they?
Hardly surprising their last candidate was certain Chris Huhne.
Voters of Eastleigh have been let down by Lib Dems before now they should tell these pledge breakers to get lost through democratic process.
