Major expansion work planned for three schools

THREE primary schools are set for major expansion work, while two infant and junior schools will merge.

Bassett Green, Bevois Town and St John’s primary schools will all have major expansion work carried out, after plans were approved by the city council’s cabinet.

The expansions have been caused by a rapid rise in the number of pupils looking for school places over the past three to four years.

St Monica Infant and Junior Schools will now merge into a new primary school in September, after the head teacher at the junior school, Angela Paris, retires at the end of the current school year.

The new St Monica Primary School would accommodate youngsters aged four to 11, and have current infant school head teacher, Kathryn Bevan- Mackie, in charge.

The work at Bassett Green Primary, which will cost £1.4m, will see the expansion of the school by 30 places per year group, and will eventually see its capacity grow to 630 pupils by September 2018.

Building work will begin in September this year.

Work will also start in September at Bevois Town Primary, which will increase its capacity to 420 pupil places by September 1, at an estimated cost of £1.45m.

Daily Echo:

The £2.1m work at St John’s Primary and Nursery School, to enlarge it by 30 places per year group to a capacity of 420 places by September 2020, will begin next September.

The city council-owned Eagle Warehouse has been identified as the space which would accommodate the extra children.
