WARNINGS are being sent out to elderly people in Southampton about a female burglar tricking her way into people’s homes.

The news comes after a young woman duped her way into a vulnerable 76-year-old widow’s home in Thornhill and took a purse after claiming to have lost her cat.

The trickster claimed to feel faint, and the victim invited her into her Pepys Avenue house and offered her a drink.

While the drink was being prepared, the caller took a black purse containing cash and a sentimental silver St Christopher medal which belonged to the widow’s husband from a handbag.

The purse zip has a distinctive wine glass charm.

This incident took place on Wednesday afternoon but it is believed the same woman attempted to dupe two other residents nearby, claiming to need a phone to get help for a sick relative and to have lost a dog.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Lee Murden at Bitterne CID on 101.

A male stranger visited my 90 year old mother last week. My mother lives alone except when I can visit her. He arrived totally unannounced, and apppeared to my mother to be official. He wandered around the house and appeared to look at the phone, and pictures We believe nothing was stolen. He came in a high visibility tabard. The police have been informed. Please inform elderly friends and relatives so they know that such people are about. This guy's motives were not clear but he was forceful enough to enter my mother's property just by being assertive and appearing official.

It was my mother who was the victim of this crime and whilst we don't really expect to see the purse and the money in it again,(which can easily be replaced,) we cannot replace the St.Christopher as it has sentimental value to my mother and obviously won't have any meaning to the person who commited this crime apart from flogging it for a pityfull amount in the local pub...
My mother was duped by a "very plausible" story by this criminal so PLEASE warn your elderly relatives/neighbours etc to be very cautious when answering their door and trust no-one !!
