A VALENTINE’S Day ball in Hook pulled in the pounds for a children’s hospital.

Around 100 guests at the ball, which took place at Hook Community Centre, in Ravenscroft, raised £1,316 for Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Among the guests were two Reading-based professional boxers – Michael Sprott, the 38-year-old heavyweight, and Tamuka Muchapondwa, the 19-year-old super welterweight.

It was organised by Sammy Johnson, of Rectory Road, whose father is a boxing trainer.

She wanted to do something for a children’s charity as her sister died at the age of four, having suffered from cerebral palsy.

She said: “The ball went out with a bang.

“Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves and we could not have done it without the businesses who supported us but also the guests.

“If it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t have raised the money.”

Among those who helped were Hook-based firm Whitewater Catering, Ian Pegg, chef at the Heatherside Rest Home in Nately Scures, who made cakes, and Bill Huntley, who ran a mobile bar.
