Conmen target motorists on M27, M3 and A303

Daily Echo: Scammers target 65 drivers in Hampshire Scammers target 65 drivers in Hampshire

SCAMMERS are targeting drivers at the sides of roads across Hampshire and conning them out of money.

Hampshire police are warning people to be vigilant after 65 separate incidents on highways and motorways in just a couple of months.

In most cases motorists are flagged down by someone stood at the side of a road claiming they have ran out of fuel.

They then tell the driver they have no cash or have lost or left their wallet - and offer what they say is gold jewellery and sometimes a watch in exchange for money.

Since the scam was first reported to police in October last year, 11 drivers have been conned out of cash with amounts varying from £10 to up to £200 on one occasion.

Conmen have targeted motorists on the M3, M27 and A303.

Detective Superintendent Paul Barton said: “It seems the offenders in these cases are preying on the good nature of their victims. Sadly, some people willingly handed over cash thinking the offer would benefit them.

“However the gold is fake, often highly polished copper made to look like gold. The goods they offer are practically worthless.

“Thankfully, in the majority of reports we've heard about, the people contacting us did not take up the offer and were not duped.

“Tackling and disrupting organised crime is a priority for the force and it's believed that the offenders are involved in such groups operating across the country.

“I hope the actions of these few criminals do not dissuade people from offering help at the side of the road to others who genuinely need it.”

Police are advising drivers who spot anyone acting suspiciously at the roadside to call them immediately on 101 and if possible note down their vehicle registration number.

The day of the good Samaritan is long gone. If I saw someone with a petrol can on the side of the road I would just think they were stupid for getting in that situation in the first place. Male or female! What I would do is stop further along the road, safely and, call the police. Best option I reckon.

The same happened to a friend in Lodge road and he reported it to a patrol within 15 minutes of the incident. They confirmed that they had several reports of a group of black people and with a large car acting the same way that day.
They didn't seem bothered.

Gone are the days of helping "stranded motorist" or hitch hikers, over the last 30 years there has been many false victims of these claims which has made it difficult for the genuine one, I've lost count the amount of times I have passed people who might of been honest in this situation but British people have lost trust in human nature due to these Scammers or better still Scumbags

I had this happen to me the other week.

I stopped on the slip road that joins the M3 in Winchester. Its a clever place to stop as it looks like the driver really is stranded in a difficult position and its not unsafe as you are not on the motorway.

I have heard about the scam so I was able to get rid of him but its a clever scam which will lead to a lot of people paying money.

The people act so nice that even when you say no they thank you etc

The guy was Eastern European - possibly Romanian.

Further to my last post I was late for a meeting so I couldn't report it to the Police.

In terms of getting the number plate, if you are driving away then you will join the motorway pretty soon so then it becomes very inconvenient to find somewhere to stop and make a call unless you want to park on the same side road the scammer is on.

Most people will only want to make the call after they have drive off from the scammer and out of walking distance - which in my case puts you on the motorway.

I just got scammed 4 hours ago... feeling pretty stupid now. Good actor this guy, had tears in his eyes. Arabic or middle eastern, bad english, late 50's desperate for some money for fuel, throwing what appeared to be all his nasty over sized gold at me and a business card and unusually i had some cash on me and was feeling like helping the guy... Shame, it'll make me leave the next person who might really need help alone.
