YOU expect to see cats and dogs, even the occasional bird of prey.

But a stray peacock is the latest unusual animal to have become a resident at a Hampshire animal shelter.

The Indian peacock was brought to the Stubbington Ark, in Fareham, after it was found wandering around the away end at Portsmouth FC’s Fratton Park ground.

A passer-by had reported it as a stray and the bird was named Pompey by staff.

A spokeswoman for the Ark, which is run by the Solent branch of the RSPCA, said it has settled down at the shelter but is very wary of strangers and has already pecked his handler.

The peacock has not been microchipped and so far efforts to trace his owner have proved unsuccessful.

Fundraising manager Vanessa Eden said “We are obviously keen to trace Pompey’s owner as peafowl are highly sociable and require companionship and can live up to 20 years. Pompey could be someone’s pet or part of a petting zoo.”
