Defeated Tory candidate made a swift exit

Defeated Tory candidate Maria Hutchings reflects on defeat. Defeated Tory candidate Maria Hutchings reflects on defeat.

Defeated Conservative candidate Maria Hutchings left the count without speaking to waiting press after the result.

The mother of four was clearly upset at not only her failure to win the seat but the fact they were beaten into third place behind UKIP.

The Conservatives had mounted a high-profile campaign to get behind Mrs Hutchings, who lost to disgraced ex-MP Chris Huhne at the last general election.

Prime Minister David Cameron had visited the constituency twice while other senior Cabinet minister including Chancellor George Osborne and Home Secretary Theresa May had also show their support for their candidate.

Her election agent was Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery who said the result had been “pretty tough” for Mrs Hutchings.

When asked why she left the count so suddently Mr Hollingbery said: “Have you ever met Maria?”

He added: "She is a pretty emotional sort. It has been pretty tough for her."

Hope she is ok and not too traumatised by the publicity & events of last night.
.
But as I said when it was announced she would be PPC, it was an awful decision by my party to put her up in the first place.

A poor mans Sarah Palin (urgh), extreme views, prone to gaffes and not suited for the cut and thrust of politics at this level.

The Conservative Party let Maria down as much as she let herself down..

Your last sentence said it all, there are many "out of work" Conservative candidates that would have been a better choice for this constituency, I don't know much about Maria, but she seemed to be subject to a brutal bullying Press campaign which the Tory hierarchy failed to defend her from. I am basically a Socialist with no one to Vote for at the moment, I am looking for answers and I must say the Tory approach put me right off any thoughts of moving across the centre line. I don't think I am alone in the Political Limbo and there is much work to be done to attract my vote. I don't agree with the UKIP policies so I have rule them out.

Isn't this the second time she's run in Eastleigh?
It was the best time for the Tories to win this seat but she made too many Gaffes & was she really the right one to stand again?
Maybe Boris should have stood?
I could see a Tory seat if he had stood.

You say you are a socialist? are you of the same mind as Southy?
The last Labour Government rode the Tory plans in the first 4 years but then came unstuck.
I know a good socialist & he's Anti Labour as he says we should hit the welfare system & get those who won't work to work as the Labour Party is for the working class not the bone idle?
he's also very Anti EU & feels Labour under & after Young betrayed their voters as they up to that guy had promised a referendum on the EU.
so why not vote UKIP?
they won't win an election & become a Government but could scare Labour & the Tories into real action on the EU?

Couldn't stand the woman. Glad she didn't get in. She should have faced the press after the results were announced and been gracious in defeat. Ran away to lick her wounds no doubt. Hopefully this will prove that Eastleigh don't want her as MP and she won't stand AGAIN in a couple of years!

Maria Hutchings was selected as a Tory candidate purely on the notoriety that she gained by hi-jacking one of Tony Blair's TV interviews.

Claiming to have been a Labour voter, she accused him of intending to close down the Special School that her son attended in Essex.

Blair denied this, and so did the Tory-controlled Essex County Council.

Well, in addition to those few minutes of gloryshe experienced a few years ago, she has recently had a few days where her credibility has been questioned, and she has failed that test - big time.

She can now retreat to political obscurity where she belongs.

I may be in a minority but see another Lib Dem win as a disaster for Eastleigh.

WHY did the voters stay away? why did 32% of 52% vote Liberal? are their eyes closed?

The Labour candidate wasn't expected to win though. Labour has never held the seat and probably never will. Chris Huhne's majority over the Tories back in 2005 was just 500 votes. The Tories were expected to reclaim Eastleigh. Instead they come in third behind UKIP. This is a total disaster for Cameron.

I doubt that anyone thought that Labour would win, but at least they increased their share of the vote, which is more than either the LibDems or the Torys can say.

I personally didn't really trust her and it appears I wasn't alone there. I can't really put my finger on why that was, but clearly others felt a similar way. To be fair she may have been a perfectly good MP, but like you say, too many gaffes.

Trust me, even Labour supporters don't vote labour in this constituency. As long as Maria and her Torey pals continue to FAIL I'll be happy. Maybe she should have had more "accurate" campaign pics takenand not used the 3 years ago (3 stone lighter) ones she did. We'd just got rid of one lying so and so.

Yes and Cameron insults the UKIP voters by calling them protest voters! 'To be expected' he says. Cameron will continue not to listen to the voters and sleep walk to defeat at the next election. He just doesn't get it, the Tory's indecisive wet period in government is turning people in their droves to UKIP. Rather than infer we don't know what we are doing he would do much better to say we are obviously getting policy wrong and will have to start reacting to what people want. Cameron is a weak leader with weak policies, he will drown in his own soup.......

Agreed - love him or hate him, Boris has charisma, that's for sure.

Interesting to see UKIP do reasonably well on the protest vote - should send a message to the ConDem coalition that people are starting to get cheesed off with them.

You have to say Maria Hutchings was
A very weak candidate too. She obviously avoided certain situations where she would have been asked questions whilst in the company of other candidates. She was frightened to talk to the press after the defeat and showed lots of insecurities. She would not have been able to fight or defend her constituency members very well. I had the distinct feeling she was a 'token' woman candidate. The Tories are no longer winners. They have become liberals in fancy dress.

I'm a Tory & I could/can see Boris asking for a chance to come back into Parliament & if he does then Camerons days are numbered.
I honestly believe if he was leader last time we would have gone back to the polls & the Liberals would have next to no MP's as they couldn't afford to run another election at that time

If that last sentence had happened do you think that would have been good for democracy?

Whilst UKIP did pump a lot of money & activists into the campaign, I am disappointed that so many people in my hometown voted for a party with links to Le Pen's Front National & very odd that a party that espouses UK 'independence' are bedfellows with French fascists.

What about Liberals friends in the EU or the Labour Party's communist friends?
In the EU all political parties get into bed with groups they would have nothing to do with outside the EU.
Le Pen is for French Independence so are other right wing parties, there are a few middle of the road (UKIP) parties who want to leave the EU so align with those others doesn't mean they agree with all their policies

There were plenty of other candidates for those who wanted to use their vote as a protest. UKIP should not be seen for this; it is a right wing anti EU party that attracts the likes of the Hamilton slime balls. At least the BNP did not put up for those not wishing to vote for mainstream parties.

Never seen UKIP attack asian houses or threaten Asians not to vote as BNP have been known to do.
BNP want a white Britain out of the EU.UKIP has never talked about repatriating any non white or mixed race person out of Britain the BNP has.
In London a Tory council offered money equivalent of a home if people born abroad wanted to go back there to live & many took them up on it.
It meant the council didn't have to look to squeeze people into blocks of flats & gave many older immigrants the chance to go back to their country of birth to live out their final years with out losing face but this had to stop because some white Anti Fascists said it was racist.
no one asked the mainly West Indians what they thought but there's now a group who want it reinstated.
To put UKIP in with BNP is totally wrong & seems to be the way of the three major parties & their press.
if it looks like a party saying what we're mostly saying & the4y say they're proud to be British they're racists so why again did UKIP field a Black woman in Southampton Test?
