SOUTHAMPTON Solent University’s media production company Solent Productions has been nominated for a prestigious national video award for the third year running.

The university’s media production centre has been nominated for the British Universities Film & Video Council Learning on Screen Awards 2013 for a series of videos designed to improve patients’ recovery after operations.

Both staff and students were involved in producing the films, which took over 12 months to make.

Produced for NHS South of England and NHS South Central they are aimed at trainee doctors and patients.

The videos explain how the Enhanced Recovery Programme (ERP) helps to improve patient care by giving patients more choice and information about their treatments and through involving them more closely in their own rehabilitation.

Solent Productions has been nominated in the General Education Non Broadcast category and is up against four other contenders.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony at the British Film Institute in London on April 18.

Jonathan Plummer, head of Solent Productions, said: “The videos involved filming with patients before, during and after surgery as well as filming with and interviewing clinicians and nursing staff at a number of NHS hospital trusts throughout the south.

“Patients are given the videos to watch in their own time once they know they are going to have surgery. The videos show remarkable footage of patients walking just hours after hip and knee surgery.”
