What's the role of women in the church?

A HAMPSHIRE university will hear a talk from the rector of a central London church about the role of women in the church.

The Rev Lucy Winkett, Rector of St James’s Church in Piccadilly will give a Foundation Lecture at the University of Winchester on Thursday, March 7.

Her lecture will explore some of the cultural assumptions governing relations between men and women, looking at the Christian contribution to this debate, which comes in the wake of the Church of England’s decision not to consecrate female bishops.

Mrs Winkett was the first woman to be appointed to the staff at St Paul’s Cathedral, where from 2003 she was Canon Precentor with particular responsibility for music and liturgy.

She is a regular on Radio 4’s Thought for the Day and writes about a range of issues relating religious practice and belief to contemporary culture and society.

The free lecture – titled ‘I used to be Snow White… but I drifted, (Mae West): Women and men in contemporary society and church’ – will take place at 6pm for 6.30pm at The Stripe in Sparkford Road.

Refreshments are available.
