in my experience when lights fail the traffic seems to move a whole lot better which begs the question why are there so many?

I use this junction every morning, always quicker when the lights are out.

Commuter bliss not chaos...

I agree, every time these lights go down traffic flows much quicker and without delays.

A few years ago they were down for several days and it was a big improvement.

A couple of years ago I got a lift with a cabbie new to the city. We got chatting, and he said "What's with this town and traffic lights? They're everywhere!"

I hadn't thought about it before, but he's right. Why do we have so many? And how much good do they do? Heh, and more to the point, how much do they all cost in maintenance contracts?
