Partnership staff get 17 per cent bonus

John Lewis staff to get 17 per cent bonus John Lewis staff to get 17 per cent bonus

STAFF at John Lewis and Waitrose across Hampshire are set to receive a massive bonus worth more than two months salary after a huge surge in annual profits.

John Lewis and Waitrose staff will receive bonuses worth 17 per cent of salary after the group shrugged off tough high street conditions to report a 15.8 per cent surge in annual profits.

The John Lewis Partnership said its 84,700 employees would receive the equivalent of nearly nine weeks' pay after increasing its total bonus pot to £210.8 million.

The firm employs 822 at its flagship store in WestQuay in Southampton and dozens of others at its stores in Portswood, in Southampton, Chandlers Ford, Romsey, Hythe and Lymington.

Each worker - from weekend check-out assistants to chairman Charlie Mayfield - receives the same percentage of salary as a bonus.

The employee-owned firm unveiled the haul after reporting pre-tax, pre-bonus profits of £409.6 million for the 12 months to January 26 and said the current year had started well, with like-for-like sales up 13.7 per cent at its department store chain.

It just goes to show what can be achieved without having shareholders stripping all of the money out of a business, well done John Lewis Partners.

That's the idea. Keeps the riff raff in Tescos.

Good for them!
This is how you maintain an effective and highly motivated workforce.

It's funny that when you strip away workers rights and pay them a pittance that you end up with morale problems, absences and high staff turnover. Perhaps every organisation relying on bussed in agency labour could look to John Lewis.

But it's all about the bottom line in the short term. Never mind the long term. There's no savings from giving people a sense of belonging and self worth.

you may pay more for your goods by going to John Lewis but you get a good service before and after sales. The staff are efficient and helpful and obviously the rewards system works. John Lewis are well known for looking after their staff and it pays dividends, literally.
good on them.

I always found JL to be very competitive - and they always run a price guarantee. It's a bit of a myth that they're overpriced

Echo, Thanks for that !!!!, whilst a majority of the country have trouble making ends meet, like myself & others I have more than one job to just keep are heads above water & had no pay rise in 4 years, this story has no interest to me at all & maybe it shouldn’t of even made the headlines !

Disagree, this is the type of profit-sharing approach to business which more should aspire to.

Instead of being indentured slaves and the culture of being grateful to have a job, this organisation shows that treating employees with respect and sharing the benefits of their labours is not anti-competitive or some terrible flavour of socialism which will ruin our "glorious standard of living".

I am pleased for them but giving that much is not right - I am the one that has popped in there to grab bread, milk etc and they have put the price up !!! Therefore I am struggling to pay for food to pay the staff their bonuses!!!!! Stinks a bit.

Luckily though you have a choice about where you shop so you can go where you afford. I shop in a mix of Aldi, Lidl, 99p, Asda, Sainsburys, and Waitrose choosing on price:quality ratio as well as what I can afford.

I want people to paid for work not the slavery of IDS and Workfare "retail training" where free labour replaces paid jobs.

If you are not happy with your current job then quit and get a new one. Maybe apply for Waitrose of John Lewis

I am all for a fair wage - they wouldnt have the profits if it were not for the consumer so instead of paying them 17%, which I think is far too much, that they pass some of that profit back to the customer !!!

I too try and shop at the most value for money places but there always comes a time that you just cant do that.

Change something in your life instead of putting your efforts into having a vendetta against those with more than you. This type of attitude will get you nowhere.

Good news for JL staff, I just wish the whole pot was put together and each member of staff received an equal % of the total pot, that the man at the top gets the same as the man/woman sitting on the checkout.

And if it was identical they would have price matched for you.

Yep agree with those that commend this. JL have a business model that works in many ways. Customer service, quality of goods, helpful and friendly staff, and an all round feeling in the shop of credible authenticity in the business approach.
Tie all that with a happy & motivated workforce and it's a win win.
Other multi's could do worse than take a look at the way JL plies it's trade.

well done to John Lewis, they treat their staff well and show how they appreciate them. The staff at John Lewis are always courteous and helpful. Like an above post, this bonus helps morale and to encourage the staff to continue their good work. How many staff in jobs are recognised, not many, i suspect they don't even get a thank you for their work. Im pleased for the John Lewis staff

Totton Ric; I am extremely happy with my 17% bonus! If you have a gripe, take that up with Tony, Gordon and Alistair. You sound jealous and bitter at other peoples reward for hard work.
