Cllr Asa Thorpe, the city council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “Safety improvements on this motorway section will save lives.”
The essential work will see the road resurfaced so that rain water drains from the road rather than collect in the middle, as it does currently after heavy downpours, therefore improving safety for the thousands of motorists who use it every day.
South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust said messages were being sent to all front-line vehicles in the area alerting them to the closure and advising them to follow diversions.
Police have warned motorists to obey the lower speed limits as they travel through residential areas along the diverted routes. Officers are out in force conducting speed checks.
