A SELF-EMPLOYED roofer who damaged his father’s car stole the parts to fix it, a court heard.

James Sheldon Welch, 22, appeared before Darlington Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded guilty to one charge of theft from a motor vehicle.

Prosecutor Jonathan Bambro said Welch stole glass from the wing mirrors of a black Mitsubishi vehicle on the evening of Thursday November 15 last year.

He later returned and tried to remove his fingerprints before stealing body trim from the same vehicle. He was captured on CCTV and later arrested.

At the time, Welch, of Yarm Road, Darlington was driving a similar black Mitsubishi vehicle belonging to his father.

He had earlier damaged it and had been told by his father to repair it.

John Clish, mitigating, said: “This was not a pre-planned act. It was opportunistic in that his vehicle was damaged and he had enquired with local garages about repairing it but there was a delay with parts.

“By chance, when he was driving, he saw another Mitsubishi and made the foolish decision to remove parts from it with his hands. Almost immediately, he compensated the victim and took the parts to the police station when it became apparent he was wanted for the offence.”

Welch was fined £135 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £20.
