Accidental death of OAP

AN elderly woman died in hospital days after suffering a fall at her Southampton home, an inquest heard.

Patricia Davis, 70, was found by her carer following a fall at her Manston Court home in Lordshill on January 31.

Her inquest at Southampton Coroner’s Court heard how she was diagnosed with a form of chronic arthritis that affects parts of the spine and had a history of falls.

Mrs Davis arrived at Southampton General Hospital’s accident and emergency department where a CT scan discovered she had suffered a “significant spinal cord injury”.

A report from consultant spinal surgeon Dr Steven McGillion said Mrs Davis’s situation was discussed with her family, and it was heard she was unlikely to improve with surgery.

Mrs Davis was transferred to a ward and remained stable until her condition deteriorated and she died on February 3.

Deputy coroner Gordon Benson said the nature of her fall was unclear and recorded a verdict of accidental death.
