Gerard Basset.
HE has been dubbed one of the greatest wine stewards of his generation.
Gerard Basset, co-founder of the famous Hotel du Vin chain, was crowned world champion sommelier in 2010 and was awarded an OBE the following year.
Now he has added another new title to his ever-growing collection of accolades.
The owner of the award-winning Hotel TerraVina in the New Forest has been honoured by Decanter magazine, which has made him its 2013 Man of the Year.
Mr Basset said: “I am humbled and overwhelmed to have been selected by my peers for this incredible honour. This is a great compliment and to have my achievements recognised in this way gives me enormous pride.”
Each year the Decanter Man of the Year award is presented to someone who has made a significant contribution to the world of wine.
The winner is carefully selected by a panel of judges made up of key figures from the international wine industry.
A Decanter spokesman said: “Mr Basset is considered by many to be one of the world’s great authorities on wine. He’s credited with changing perceptions of wine service worldwide while training and mentoring a generation of young sommeliers.”
