New Pope for world's 1.2 billion Catholics elected

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was tonight elected at the Vatican as the new Pope.

Amid jubilant scenes,he appeared on the balcony of St Peter's Basilica  at 7.22pm UK time, after 115 cardinals elected him as the new leader for the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.

Pope Benedict XVI's resignation threw the church into turmoil and exposed deep divisions among cardinals tasked with finding a manager to clean up a Vatican bureaucracy embroiled in recent scandals.

The new pope, the 266th, will be tasked with reviving Catholicism in a time of growing secularism.

Elected on the fifth ballot, he was chosen in one of the fastest conclaves in years.

The quick election was a surprise given there was no clear front-runner going into the vote and that the church had been in turmoil following the upheaval unleashed by Pope Benedict XVI's surprise resignation.

Argentinian Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76,  had to receive 77 votes, or two-thirds of the 115, to be named pope.

He will be known as Pope Francis, and he thanked the crowd of 70,000 for their warm reception and led them in prayer to thank his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI.

He added: “The world should set off on a path of love and fraternity.

“I would like to thank you for your welcome, the community of Rome, its brotherhood, I thank you.

“Above all, I would like to pray for Pope Benedict XVI.”

Minutes later, a message was sent from the official papal Twitter account, which had been re-activated, which read: “HABEMUS PAPAM FRANCISCUM” - which roughly translates as “We have Pope Francis.”

He is the first Pope to be chosen outside of Europe for more than a Millennium.

The news was celebrated by Hampshire’s senior Catholic churchman, Bishop Philip Egan, and welcomed the new Holy Father on behalf of the of the Diocese of Portsmouth.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted to welcome our new Holy Father, Pope Francis 1.

“We are profoundly grateful to God for the gift of this great and holy man to the Church to lead us as 265th Successor of St. Peter.

“We pray for him and express to him our deep loyalty and fidelity.

“May the Holy Spirit inspire him with all the spiritual gifts needed for the work of new evangelisation, and grant him the personal health and strength for the challenges ahead.

“God bless our Pope.”

Not exactly the inspiring choice that the Catholic Church needs to lead it out of the current scandals.
Aged 76 can he really be expected to meet the demands of the job bearing in mind the previous pope resigned due to a combination of age and ill health.
How long before he feels the same way?
An opportunity has been missed to appoint a younger person for the long term.
Not the way to attract younger people and families who have become dissolutioned with the 'culture' of the Catholic Church.

He is a messenger from God, so he is from everywhere.

Every time a crime takes place it's down to our new pope who is God's spokesperson, I think?

I'm going to try walking on water later, I'll start in the bath and see if I am worthy of being the first female Pope.

I'm surprised Simon cowell hasn't high jacked this and turned it in to an x-factor event. Maybe the Catholic Church has missed a trick there.

Will the next Argentinian invasion of the Falklands have a Papal blessing ? Knowing their reputation for honesty and sincerity he will be on his knees asking for the Falklands back, and preaching that it really was the hand of God, and just as the Falklands voted overwhelmingly that they want to remain British........inter
esting and more than a coincidence ?

76? well all that fuss for an old man who's life expectancy's what?
now he'll elect old cardinals who believe the same as he does so the church never moves forward ?
I'm CofE & don't give a hoot who the pope is or if there even is a pope but surely this isn't going to win back Catholics to the church is it?

Exactly when did Britain colonise those Islands?
Exactly when did the country known as Argentina come into existence?
When did Argentineans inhabit the Malvinas?
or has this only occurred because of the Oil & minerals found under these Islands borders?

If any other organisation was so rife with paedophilia, then this would be an outrage and the public would demand it be closed down. Yet this outdated, ancient, secret society is allowed to continue. This world is really messed up. Religion, imprisonment of the mind !

Quick brief history. discovered by the british, was used by people like drake as a raiding base on the spainish, then forgotten about, english lease it to the french, french sold what was left of the lease to the argentines, lease runs out english kick all argentinians off the islands and starts to colonise the island, and the rest you should know about

Southy Argentina as a country never existed, the Falklands were colonised by Britain the Spanish & Portuguese were driven from South America yet you would think they were all Spanish then separate countries came into being.
as it is in distance isn't Chile as close as Argentina?
Exactly where are these historical Islands called Malvinas?
it was the greed of a Junta that started this all off until then talks were on going about closer links with the Islands & Argentina with no talk of an enforced union.
Argentina know that a section of the Antartic under the Falklands control are rich in Oil & minerals & that's the only reason they're making a claim for the Falklands

Loose the Spainish and Portugese did not know the Falklands Islands was there till the mid to late 1600's, where they use to sail close to the main land they did not see the islands, it was around mid 1500 that English sea raiders found the islands and used it as a base to raid spainish ships, after the English spainish wars was over the England lease the Falklands to the French, during a French english war the lease on the island was sold to the Argentins, who colonise the isalnds and called it the Malvina, the lease runs out and the Argentins was romoved from the islands and then colonise by a walsh and scottish people.
The Falkland Islands are not connected the Antarctica plate, the Falklands are connected the the south amermica plate, the oil field your talking about runs from Queen Charlotte bay (west island Falklands) to Puerto Santa Cruz to Puerto San Julian (Argentina) the oil field as been known about since the 1930's but the technology to get it out of the sea bed in the sort of conditions that you will get there was not about, drilling for the oil is still done on the main land and the drill head is controlled to a direction to reach the oil, the Argentins have been laying claims to the islands for 200 years, what happened in the 1980's was not the first time the Argentins have tried and nore do I expect it will be the last

The Falklands was found by one of drakes sea capitans, you can find bits here and there though out Maritine History, The Falklands played a major part in the Battle of the River plate wwii, the ships that took part in that battle was base at Port Stanley. Port stanley Navy Base controlled the South Atlantic.
