THE future of a Hampshire pub remains in doubt after councillors rejected proposals to develop it as part of a new housing scheme.

The Prince of Wales in Shirrell Heath has been up for sale since October last year, but remains unused.

Developers proposed building three new houses and landscaping around the pub, with a new patrons’ car park.

Winchester City Council received eight objections, with concern at encroachment into the adjacent meadow and danger to children from the cars using the new car park.

Councillors refused the scheme, saying it would be intrusive and visually damaging, and wouldn’t provide enough recreational space.

The pub initially went on the market for £275,000, or to rent for £27,000 a year.
