Gang of thugs jailed for 31 years for terrifying attack on man in his Southampton home
12:00pm Saturday 16th March 2013 in News
By Rory McKeown, Senior reporter
A GANG of thugs who left a man unconscious in a brutal attack in his own home have been jailed for a total of more than 31 years.
The masked raiders used a sledgehammer to smash their way into the flat and carried out a terrifying assault using a baseball bat, a knife and CS gas.
Neighbours called police who caught the attackers but only after two of them had tried to escape by jumping out of a third-storey window, a court heard.
Today Jason Cook, 29, Jacob Warren-Emanuel, 23, Gary Forbes, 25, and Samuel Jones, 21, are all behind bars.
Southampton Crown Court heard how the men used a sledgehammer to smash their way into Mr Morrell’s flat in Clover Nook, Redbridge, in the early hours of July 8 last year.
They ransacked his home and launched an appalling assault on their victim, the court was told.
He was threatened with a baseball bat and a knife, dragged around his flat and sprayed in the face with CS gas.
Warren-Emanuel, 23, Forbes, 25, and Jones, 21, were found guilty of aggravated burglary following a trial in January.
Cook, 29, of no fixed address, had previously pleaded guilty to the charge.
Sentencing, Judge Gary Burrell QC told the court how Mr Morrell’s life has been turned “upside down” following the attack, and has been suffering from nightmares and night terrors.
He jailed Warren-Emanuel, of North East Road, Sholing, and Forbes, of Sinclair Road, Southampton, for eight years each for their roles in the attack.
Jones, of Wilton Avenue, Southampton, was jailed for seven-and-a-half years after it emerged he was in breach of a suspended sentence for burglary.
Judge Burrell told the men: “You managed to break into his house, disable him and steal the drugs he had. It was you Cook who knew of Mr Morrell. I am quite satisfied it was your idea to go there.
“You took with you white forensic-type suit overalls, which you changed into, no doubt with the view of leaving no scientific trace.
“You were all caught. You Cook and the other man jumped from the bedroom window and tried to escape. It was three storeys high – a reckless act risking death and serious injury.
“Mr Morrell understandably thought he was going to be killed and it was fortunate he sustained no permanent injury.”
Sentencing Cook to 12 years, reduced to eight due to his early guilty plea, Judge Burrell said: “You accept you were responsible for planning the attack.
“If you hadn’t done what you did none of these other young men and their families would be in the position they are in. You caused this.”
Judge Burrell commended the police officers for their quick response to the incident.

The betting is that they will not serve the complete sentence, so they are living on the state, faring better than a good many pensioners, and then they will be out to cause more mayhem.

@ottostrasser Sorry to disapoint you but they are all British born and bread in this country, also their parents.. So don't be so ignorant.
Incidently meant the original comment as a joke so "whoosh".
On a serious note that is an unpleasant selection of our wonderful multi-racial society.
Sounds like the poor victim wasnt sqeaky clean either if they were after his stash of drugs.

They ransacked the flat - I reckon it was dough they were looking for.

I can only hope that this mob upon release are not permitted to resume any form of hard working tax payer funded benefits. It is time that society took a firm common sense stand with species such as these who abuse the very society that sponsors and houses them.

I don't know how you can comment on something and someone you know nothing about apart from what you read in the sensationalist press.
All I am saying is try and think a bit deeper, don't make assumptions on little facts. The way I see it all involved in this are victims of society. Some will take a little more brain power to see.
It is too easy and simple to jump on a witch hunt, condemnation band wagon, and harmful to everyone involved.
Do not sit in your ivory towers judging, try to understand that all is not what you see in some newspaper. People have backgrounds, who knows maybe they were all poor drug addicts not thinking clearly and accidentally got hooked on something, you just don't know. It must be nice to of made all the right decisions in your life well done.
For some life's not that straightforward.

I appreciate we don’t know “all “ the facts there are only the most important ones if there are facts that we are not aware then lets hear them but until I do I say all four are nasty thieving vermin and so do many on this forum
At the end of the day these people were judged by a court of law and found guilty. These adult people made their choices in life and now have ended up in prison there are many people who can claim they had a poor upbringing got bullied or some other excuse of why they did what they did but that doesn’t matter now. Perhaps they should dwell on their future life choices whilst they are banged up.

.
However... these lads' actions - as reported anyway - were premeditated (overalls etc) and involved malicious torment (dragging him around the flat, CS gas etc). That's not just someone caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time, or forced into a corner.
.
I know someone who's been the lead story on here in a major trial - rightly found innocent in the end thankfully. He was presented on here as no different from the scumbag who actually did it and then tried to stitch him up - who was found guilty and won't be out until he's a pensioner. So I'm well aware of how the media can skew perceptions. I expect there's a degree of that in this case as well, but it's hard to imagine just what factors could significantly mitigate for this four.

I think it all depends on how flexible you are on what type of job you are looking for.
I would sign up at job agencies (Gi group London road for example) I would get on the mailing lists of places like the Council, Royal mail and the NHS (there are at least 3 trusts serving Southampton) I think it’s important you don’t rule any type of job out as once you are employed you will find getting a better job much easier. I would give you three organisations a try (Health/Social Care sector) NHS Professionals, Pulse and TQtwentyone.
When I was unemployed I found S.A.R.C to be helpful if only for signposting and City College had some good I.T courses which weren’t that expensive that I was able to fit around my work routine

Firstly, don't bother to comment about my grammer etc. etc. etc. cause I don't give a damm. However what I do give a damm about is "Cyber Bullying" These guys are locked up behind bars for attacking a "drug dealer" who is most probably responsible for injecting drugs into parts of Southampton. Like I said before two of these guys are innocent and yes they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The question you have to ask yourself have you ever had a close friend or family member who has e taken the wrong path in life??? Do all the people on here who have written the degrading and nasty comments not have a heart, as the guys are locked up and will never see these comments. However, their closest family and friends will. Do you for one minute think that any parent would want their child to take the wrong path in life??? Have a heart please..
Have you guys not heard of the "Human Rights act" ? this means that if Sam2013 contacted their lawyers the Daily echo who have to Divulge details (IP address etc.)of people who have made such nasty comments etc. etc. etc. Also, if one of their relatives happen to read your nasty comments and ended up taking their own life then you would be done for MURDER. Can I suggest once again you guys think of a constructive way of trying to help our community.
Remember what goes around comes around slowly but surely... Cyber Bullying is a criminal offence... I rest my case.

OMG! You guys have been hard at work... I sat here and wrote about 500 words and then lost it. :0( Firstly, don't bother to comment about my grammer etc. etc. etc. cause I don't give a damm.
So you are stating the victim is a “drug dealer” not as I delve in such dark corners of our city but I hope you are right he may have lawyers also
Secondly Sam2013 has also been guilty of some filthy language as well so I don’t think she will get very far anyway all my comments have been directed at the Four who have been found guilty by court of law I am merely repeating that rather large fact over and over.
You keep banging on about two of these nasty people are innocent , firstly you haven’t told us which two and the reason why and if there was a good reason(s) why they are innocent then why was this not brought up in court
WHY?

Having paid attention in school, a desk job enables me to ridicule a fool like you to my hearts content. I am judging YOU for YOUR own stupidity and your complete and utter inability to converse in proper English. As to the idiots who got dragged into beating another man half to death to steal his 'stash'.... I assume they are the stupid ones in your peer group, which would make you the smartest. (Which does not bode well for your demographic...) And if as you say 'we don kno da full story braap' then please enlighten us. I will happily reconsider my views. Otherwise, jog on you plank.Does being able to write or speak in the queens english make you intelligent? Obviously not!, well done for paying attention in school what a good obedient little pupil you were :) Shame that your brain is so crammed full of grammar punctuation and pronunciation that it left little room for deep and open minded thought. If someone is making a comment either way why do you have to try and drag their background into it and whether they are related, that has no relevance on the comment made at all. And i notice that those speaking up for the accused dont employ these tactics..makes you wonder who the intelligent ones are in this conversation. I expect you are a bible basher or someone who believes people are born evil etc **** blah, if you had an ounce of intelligence you would know this not to be true. I also bet you believe everything you read and that everyone in prison is guilty? That all judges and politicians are pure and good..wake up fools this is the real world where people make mistakes and sometimes clear thinking gets blurred for different reasons and the wrong decision gets made. If you had intelligence you would know that the real underlying problems lie in society itself as these people didnt arrive in a spaceship. And did you also know that it costs £43,000 a year to keep a prisoner in prison..do you not think that money would be better spent keeping people out of prison!!! We live in f***ed up society which will have its problems, to attack the individuals and assume anything about their lives is not exactly intelligent is it oh goody goody school prefect type person.

I'm defending nothing I am trying to think rather than judge.

@ Rich999 yeh, you are right, everyone in prison is innocent.
I dont claim that taking time to use proper language conventions makes me more inteligent. But, if I truly care abount an issue, care and time should be taken in order for ones opinions to be taken seriously. After all I am dealing with adults am I not? Anything less is just disrepectful to the general public.
If you dont get it thats fine.
You dont have to work as an electrician, any job is better then no job right? Ohh at least thats how ive been brought up.
If you think I dont know that side of life thats your opinion. Bottom line all you have to do is say 'no' and walk away. Making the wrong choice is so much easier. Therefore I have no sympathy here.

No. The Echo would only have to pass over ISP details if the police (not lawyers) ordered them too. For this to happen, someone would have had to have committed some sort of crime with their comments, or that their comments could provide evidence for. "Being mean about someone" is not a crime.
.
Before you start harping on about 'cyber bullying' again, please don't. Cyber bullying has to be sustained and targeted harassment. Posting insulting things about recent convicts on a newspaper website comes nowhere close to qualifying.
.

No. Just... no. No mens rea, no actus rea, no nothing. It's really an incredibly silly claim to make.
.
I've nothing against you, and I genuinely hope you have a wonderful life too, but your armchair lawyering is really, *really* misinformed.

Ok you are correct one is entitle to their own views. However, I am sticking to my guns. Calling someone family 'Hill Billy's etc etc" is very unfair as it could be argued that they are as innocent as the "Alleged" victim. Well guys interesting forum I will now move on with a clear Conscience.
