Southampton residents join national protest against 'bedroom tax'
12:50pm Monday 18th March 2013 in News
By Patrick Knox, Senior Reporter
IT’S a tax that has come under fire for hitting society’s needy where it hurts. Under the Government’s welfare reforms those deemed to have a spare bedroom in their council or housing association home will have their housing benefit claims reduced by hundreds of pounds a year.
Now people in Southampton have joined thousands across the UK in public protests against what has been dubbed a “bedroom tax”, which is expected to affect 660,000 people nationally when it comes into effect next month.
Campaigners converged outside WestQuay shopping centre on Saturday with demonstrations also taking place in 50 other cities, in-cluding Liverpool and Manchester.
Protesters in Southampton included city councillor Satvir Kaur, a Labour backbencher, who represents Shirley. She has put down a formal motion at Wednesday’s full council meeting urging the city council to send a message to the Government that the new tax is unfair, unworkable and counterproductive.
She said: “The tax will hit the most vulnerable people in Southampton and I don’t think people realise the dire impact it's going to have.”
According to the National Housing Federation (NHF) those affected include disabled people, separated parents, who share care of their children and couples who use a spare bedroom when recovering from an illness or operation.
Doubts have also been raised about how tenants can downsize amid huge waiting lists for affordable housing.
NHF figures show more Southampton families will be hit by the bedroom tax than in any other authority in the south-east, with more than 1,800 families set to lose out. More than 1,135 of those households contain someone with a disability.
Labour Southampton Test MP Alan Whitehead said: “More local families will be hit, more pressure will be put on local housing services and more money will be sucked out of our local economy.”
The Government says the bedroom tax is a key part of reforms to encourage people out of welfare and into work.

I think councillor Satvir Kaur is in the wrong political party as the Labour party as all ready said they will not get rid of the bed room tax and keep all wealthfare refroms in place.
So I will start with NO THEY HAVEN'T.
You are either telling a lie in order to make your own party look good or you have invented this in your own fantasy world.
Given that most of your posts are bizzare fiction I will be charitable and assume the latter.

There's an old lady round my way who lives in a three bed council house but lives solely on the ground floor. These are the kind of people who this is meant to effect. Unfortunately there will always be a minority of people who will be worse off as with most "reforms", it's not fair, but that's how it is.
Also the bedroom tax will not apply to pensioners so the lady you speak of will not be affected.

Just wondering if some people may be able to rent a room out and earn an additional income, thereby lowering the amount of benefit claims and keeping their larger home?
I ask the question about sub-letting as private tenants are not allowed under a normal agreement.

Oh dear what a bunch of sorry looking people no wonder they don't have jobs! I think the bedroom tax is one of the best ideas the government have come up with in a very long time. Why should these people be allowed to sit in their massive council houses without having to lift a finger to support themselves when some people face real hardship to make ends meet even though they work their a***s off?. Average working families are paying through the noses to rent privateley all over this country, most of them will never get a council house because of the selfish idiots who want to have cake and eat it - each and every one of them has had the right to buy for a very long time now so if they really love their homes so much, why haven't they?. - because they want everything for free is the answer! sureley it is about time they stopped getting it easy? I live in a council house myself, being one of the lucky few who was in the right place at the right time - with 2 children under 10, we struggle to make ends meet even though we both work full time but the bedroom tax will not affect us because we dont qualify for benefits anyway but we still have to pay the increse in council tax, water and utilities without a pay rise - am i moaning? NO! and as for moaning about not being able to get a move from the council, that is not true, they are moaning because the council will no longer pay them to move. There are hundreds of families in smaller properties wanting to pay for bigger in this city on several homeswapper sites so stop with the silly excuses!
Anyone who uses the C word deserves the worst, they are the lowest of the low. END OF.
The Government give people a minimum amount to live on which is above poverty level.
You can easily eat a good healthy meal for two on £3 a day maximum. A packet of mixed FRESH cauliflower and broccoli is £1, baby pearl FRESH potatoes a big bag £1, Steak pies 4 for £2, you could even treat yourself to some tinned peas and sweetcorn.
No excuses for not eating cheap, unless you want to do the cheap option of expensive takeaways?

I suppose it is your right to live in a council house rent free is it? I have fallen on hard times recently actually - I lost my job a week before Christmas and do you know what I did? I went out and got another one - it took me over a month but perserverance and actually wanting to work paid off! Also, interesting that your only argument to my comments are to call me names - kind of proves my point doesn't it? It's wasters like you that give ppl like me a bad name but the difference is that in another ten years I will own my home from sheer hard work and my children will have work ethic - you and yours will not.

Thatcher made it possible for millions of people to become homeowners easily over 20 years ago and the only reason some have lived in a council house for years on end without buying is because they were having their rent paid for them by the taxpayer, a weekly dss cheque and free school meals for their offspring! it was considered easy and the reason i know this? MY OWN PARENTS WERE DOING IT! because they could, because they were allowed to by the government and because everyone around them was doing the same thing and that is an unfortunate fact.cash in hand jobs and housing benefit were a way of life for me - I thaught it was normal! well let me tell you that after spending six months on the social with a small child and settling for the basics was enough to make me want to do better for my children and i have worked ever since! I watch some of my family struggle on but I dont feel guilty when i drive past them at the bus stop or when my kids have more under the tree than theirs do, why should I? I work my A** off while they go to bingo!so why should I pay my rent, scrape my council tax together and then pay yours so you can have an extra bedroom? I worked hard for my extra room mate, what did you do??menotyou wrote:What do you know about me? You know I'm angry but you have no idea who I am, what I do or anything. Yes I lost it. I'm not sorry I lost it. Til now no one really cared about people on benefits oh!, there is always the one's who spout 'get a job' but what about the genuine cases? Are they all the same? No they're not. Don't you have someone withing your family on benefits? I bet you do and, are they the lowest of the low? In your eyes, maybe, so I, wouldn't like to be in your family. I am just sticking up for some of the poorest (and I've been there and don't wish to return there either) in this country. How much more can they be trodden on? The benefit system is here to help not, give with one hand and take back with two. That's what's happening here. It's not the case of an extra bedroom it's about making the poorest pay. Once again I reiterate, I hope you never need help because frankly you don't sound worthy!bazzeroz wrote:I am really curious about something bazzeroz, You do KNOW, don't you? that your council house is not YOURS? You rent it from the local authority because they allow you to. if you want to keep it, pay for it. It really is that simple - you seem angry though - could it be a toss up between staying in your big cushty house and eating takeaways every night?kiddynamite wrote: Get a job pay your own rent and you can have 20 bedrooms if you like!!! Pfft at people whining, you get your rent for free so stop complaining! I wish somebody would pay my rent/mortgage for me!Your full of fcucking s.hite! Just step back and see what you have said! I was on that protest Saturday and 3 people told me to 'get a job'. Do they know me? No! You may well find yourself in that situation tomorrow and, I hope you don't because its awful. Thatcher started this problem and the Tory party are following it through. Its the same as ethnic cleansing. If this was a war zone CaMORON and Ian Dun-nuffink Smith would be charged with war crimes. So, get off your fcucking high horse and wake up to reality you c.unt!
