A STROUD cannabis supplier tried in vain to 'pull the wool over the jury's eyes' by denying his involvement in dealing, a judge said.

Fork lift truck driver Jamie Marrett, 27, of Nouncells Cross, Stroud, pleaded not guilty to having 92.63 grams of herbal cannabis worth £920 with intent to supply but was convicted at Gloucester crown court on Thursday.

He had tried to blame two other defendants who have admitted possession with intent to supply the drug on 31st May last year.

After the jury found him guilty Judge Jamie Tabor QC said "You tried to pull the wool over the jury's eyes. It was not successful. Hardly surprising really."

He told Marrett he was almost certain to be jailed. However, he agreed to a defence request to bail Marrett till June 6th for a pre-sentence report.

On that day Marrett's two co-defendants who have admitted the offence, Emily Madeley, aged 28, of Nouncells Cross, and Sam Jones, aged 23, of Severn rd, Stonehouse, will also be sentenced.

During Marrett's trial prosecutor Nick O'Brien alleged Marrett was 'part of a small team of three' involved in supplying cannabis in the Stroud area.

He said police went to Madeley's home on 31st May last year and found four bags containing the cannabis. One bag had Marrett's fingerprint on it.

Also found was a wallet with £1,460 cash in it and a debit card bearing Marrett's name.

Marrett lived 20 doors down the road and his house was also searched. There they found a boxing glove containing cannabis worth £110 and a Wilkinson's bag containing another £30 worth of the drug together with 40 smaller bags.

Seven of Marrett's fingerprints were found on the bags. The police also found a set of scales and a cannabis grinder.

Marrett was home when the search took place and was found to have £265 cash on him.

Mr O'Brien said Marrett made a prepared statement in which he effectively said "It's nothing to do with me.' When he was questioned he made no comment.

After the jury found Marrett guilty Judge Tabor granted him bail with a curfew from 8pm-6am each night.
