“IT IS the wrong store in the wrong place.” That is the view of outraged residents, after Tesco unveiled the location of its 17th express store in Southampton.

The supermarket giant says its new store in Thornhill Park Road will create 20 jobs.

But the move has sparked anger with some residents saying the new store could force nearby independent stores to shut while causing traffic problems on the busy road.

Tesco’s plans to redevelop the site at 1-5 Thornhill Park Road are at an advanced stage and the firm could even start work to build the new store later this year.

The firm has handed in an application to the city council for “minor works” at the site, while But some fear independent traders will suffer and there are also concerns that the entrance to the store is opposite a road junction which has seen a number of accidents in recent years.

Douglas Crescent resident Jane Goodwin said: “My main concerns are the impact on local traffic, and the existing businesses that are here. I think some of them may be forced to close because of this new store."

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “It’s the wrong store in the wrong place.

“There are already shops round here doing what Tesco would do, there’s no need for it.”

Lynn Law, who works at the neighbouring Grande Wines, added: “I think it might bring us more trade, but it might have an effect on other stores.”

Harefield councillor Royston Smith, whose ward includes the site, has said he will be objecting to the plan.

A Tesco spokesman said the firm has also applied for a premises licence for 6am-11pm.

He added: “We would like to bring forward plans for a convenience store on Thornhill Park Road, creating 20 jobs for local people and providing customers with a range of fresh groceries and convenience goods.

“We believe that customers will welcome having another choice of place to shop and the convenience of being able to top up a weekly shop in their local area.”

The news comes after rumours circulated that fast food chain McDonald’s is looking to buy the nearby Bittern pub.

Pub goers have rallied round the watering hole, also on Thornhill Park Road, and with the support of Southampton Itchen MP John Denham have launched a bid to buy the pub and save it from closure.
